I can't really limit it to 5. I have a "top tier" of my all-time favorites, which includes:

Rush (Permanent Waves)

Led Zeppelin (Physical Graffiti)

Pink Floyd (Wish You Were Here)

King Crimson (Red)

Yes (Close to the Edge)

Steven Wilson / Porcupine Tree (Deadwing)

Frank Zappa (One Size Fits All)

Tool (Lateralus)

I made a graphic montage of my top 25 bands logos last year

Great to see another Dixie Chicks fan on the forum... Oh wait..

The Dixie Hicks is one of the few bands Steve Morse didn't play in.

Speaking of Steve...I don't think anyone included Deep Purple on their lists. I'd take them over Sabbath any day.

1. The Who

2. Rush

3. The Beach Boys

4. Talking Heads

5. The Clash

The top two are solid. The next three are interchangeable.

Honorable mentions: The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Temptations

Incredibly hard to narrow down the last two as they change on occasion, but at the moment:

Rush

R.E.M

Talking Heads

Jethro Tull

Alice in Chains

Nice range there.

Their deluge of singles in the mid-sixties are stellar, of course, but it's their seventies stuff that make them one of my biggest favorites. The albums Sunflower, Surf's Up and Holland are all full of great stuff.

The Beatles

Van Halen

Black Sabbath

Rush

The Rolling Stones

I want to put Soundgarden on the list, but It’s hard to bump any of those bands.

Reminding me once again that I sorely need to get on to listening more to Black Sabbath.

I'm starting to get the message as well; I've never listened to a Black Sabbath album in my life. I know I've heard Iron Man, of course, and I think I looked up War Pigs out of curiosity. I've just always dismissed them as an AC/DC without the sense of humor (I love AC/DC but not without the tongue-in-cheek self-deprecation). From what I see on this thread it seems I might be missing something.

p.s. I've heard Paranoid too, which makes it Me-3, Tipper Gore-0. Compared to Tipper I'm a Sabbath expert.

Over the decades, my top 5 classic rock bands - based on their complete catalogs - have pretty much always been RUSH, Jethro Tull, Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Van Halen. Dire Straits and the Police just missing the cut.

Non-classic rock top 5 (by album) would be Midnight Oil (10,9...1) DEVO (Are We Not Men?), X (More Fun in the New World), b52s (Wild Planet), The Church (Blurred Crusade).
