44. Rush - Moving Pictures

Explain this entry.

"Real fans," are those who followed a band before they broke huge, and reject the breakout album as being "too commercial" or "too pop." So you get fans saying albums like Screaming for Vengeance or 90125 or Eliminator or Moving Pictures are "pop." Literally they are I suppose (popular) but they're not "pop" albums. So since Some Girls was listed, I felt free to list a few breakout albums as being "pop." Moving Pictures is a classic example. Venture into the Rush forum and you'll see wingnuts telling you that Moving Pictures is the band's 12th best album.

I guess it was wishful thinking to suggest in my OP we not start arguing over the definition of pop. Alas, now that we're here...

I agree that's a valid line of thought. If we're going to count breakout albums as pop for becoming popular, MP is a prime example. However, if we want to define pop more by the style of the music than its actual popularity or breakout status, anything from Signals to RTB is a more reasonable choice.

46. The Knack - Get The Knack

Is there a better example of a band that was, at best, mediocre, and yet EVERYBODY owned a particular album of theirs? I was in Jr. High when that came out, and I think pretty much everyone I knew had it.

I happened to be stumble on Kurt Cobain's top 50 albums of all time online today, and he listed Get The Knack in his top 20.

That one in particular is fantastic. They opened for The Police on the Ghost in the Machine tour. Very fun live act.

Rush is so melodic and immediate it deserves to be suggested. It's definitely a heavier "pop" album.
