The old school country thread. (90s back, and stuff like it)

I was just out with some buddies at the bar, and the crowd was a little older and super low key; so we decided to blow up the jukebox with old country... We were mixing in classic rock, and I even got Working Man a spin, but for the most part it was stuff like Alan Jackson, Garth, Clint Black, George Strait and Reba... It ended up being kind of a big hit and I had a few strangers getting in on it. It turned a pretty mild night into something unexpected and satisfying.

I know country isn't for everyone; but damn, that early 90s country was amazing. If /anyone thinks of an old relic they want to share, I thought it'd be cool to have a thread.

Here's a few I heard tonight...

My country thing started a little later like 1995 through 2000. In 1995 I was stationed in Watertown NY and would drive through many radio station markets on the way back toThe City. I learned to like country.

Like this gem, I’d sing along at the top of my lungs.

My folks liked Willie, Waylon, Cash, Alabama, Oak Ridge Boys, all kinds of stuff like that. We would watch Hee Haw. Part of the soundtrack of my youth, along with '70's pop.

I don't mind some new country. Really depends on what.

I always dug the way old stuff, Cash, Hank Williams, Sr., Marty Robbins, Willie Nelson, older Kenny Rogers (I've been listening to Ruby a lot lately). From the 80's-90's stuff, John Anderson, Clint Black, Randy Travis, George Strait are acts I liked and still do. As a drummer I like a some of the new country stuff that captures the Skynyrd-Dead vibe.

The Dixie Chicks are great musicians, and I liked their stuff. A shame what went down...

In the early days, a lot of country artists had a wonderfully anti-authoritarian stance -- and it's very sad that somewhere along the way, in order to be promoted or accepted in a mainstream way, politics and a pro military stance has swallowed up this genre ..

The hypocrisy is sickening, to be honest

You know you're old when the 90's is considered 'old' country.

I thought the genre starting becoming a corporate dead zone in the '80s. After all, even Johnny Cash was being cast aside at that time.

Here's an interesting take on the alt-rockers suddenly loving Cash:

As to favorite old country, there's so much. Tops of them all:

Tom T. Hall

I like old country, but my wife will play some of the 90s stuff when she's drunk and I don't hate it. Lucas mentioned Dwight...I love Dwight. Old Dwight and Hank Jr. are about as new as I get. Oh, and Hank III's Straight to Hell album from a few years ago. That's one of my top five country albums.

...Didn't he sing "I Like Beer"? I think I remember that.

You see what’s happen to Willie Nelson lately? The dude smokes pot ffs. Not exactly a ceratain TX senators favorite. Heard some of Maines solo album at Starbucks years ago. Good covers especially Mother by PF.

Have to mention the weird al of the genre.

I had a couple cousins who were into the genre back in the late '50s/ sixties an on, The Calhoun Twins. Jack and Jerry are my Dad's Sister's Kids. and had a pretty long career in the music industry Google them if you want more, there is a site that has more on them. They did a lot of songs that were popular in the times they were active and such...I've been to their houses since 1964 and gotten a lot of ticket offers, etc. Jack Passed on in November last year, and I had to hear it from the site I just went to. These two were MEGA rich, and offered me jobs as Tour bus driver/maintainer and stuff. One of their companies, [they both had seperate Tour Bus making companies], and both made roads and Hotels over in the middle east and the U.S. Their albums were GOOD too! My Dad had a couple, but they've been lost for a looooong time...
