The Mellotron is just tossed in those other songs and makes no difference one way or another I wasn't aware there was mellotron present on any album post-1980, not that I've looked closely at which keyboards Ged used (or Hugh) on which records. Frankly I've never heard noticeable keys on Snakes in the first place, and most of the songs that apparently contain them aren't very good. The mellotron is used to wonderful effect in Tears! If this helps I checked wiki for Test for Echo and it says Geddy plays the synthesisers, while on Snakes and Arrows it says Geddy plays the Mellotron.
