130. Pearl Jam - Once (New_World_Man)

Lot's of great deep tracks on that first PJ album. Also, sorry for ruining the Queen run but I only know their hits. :P

How exactly is the opening track from a debut album that has sold 15 million copies in the US a deep cut?

I've never heard this song.

I don't think it's about album sales since this is a song list and not album list. There's other songs from big selling albums on here so you should question other people as well. Anyway, I chose it because I've never heard it on the radio. Anyway, it "only" sold 13 million. ;)

My new purple shoes

been amazing the people next door

And my rock and roll 45s

been enraging the folks, on the lower floor...

141. The Prophet Song - Queen (The Cat 3)

The most fantastic attempt to steal the show away from Freddie that Brian had ever concocted. Pure gold.

Can this really be considered a deep cut, though?

It's an incredible song, but I certainly don't consider it a deep cut...

It's anything but a hit. Deep cut certainly. All that prog, no way this would gain mass appeal outside of Queen's dedicated fanbase. Yes it's a fan favorite, much like Xanadu, but Queen are different from Rush in that they have a whole catalogue of massive hits, many of which are also massive fan favorites. The Prophet's Song would never come close to showing up on a greatest hits compilation, whereas Xanadu just might make it onto a Rush compilation. You can get Queen without The Prophet's Song, as it's incredible but doesn't really define their career. You really can't get Rush without Xanadu, as that's one of their most defining numbers, almost as central to understanding the band as 2112, TSOR, or TS.

Besides, if we're going to start questioning now whether or not some big fan favorites are too big to be on this list, we've got a number of songs to remove from both threads. No Prophet's song, no March Of The Black Queen, for starters.

130. Pearl Jam - Once (New_World_Man)

Lot's of great deep tracks on that first PJ album. Also, sorry for ruining the Queen run but I only know their hits. :P

How exactly is the opening track from a debut album that has sold 15 million copies in the US a deep cut?

I don't think it's about album sales since this is a song list and not album list. There's other songs from big selling albums on here so you should question other people as well. Anyway, I chose it because I've never heard it on the radio. Anyway, it "only" sold 13 million. ;)

Honestly, there's a lot of songs on this list that I have no clue about. So that's why I haven't questioned other choices. But with an album as successful as Ten is, I just can't call the opening track a deep cut. When it's the first song you hear after pushing the play button, what's deep about it?

I'm probably just over thinking this. Carry on.

On a lesser album it certainly would've been a single, I'll say that much against it being here. But seeing as there are so many hits on Ten and that wasn't really one of them, it's certainly deeper than Even Flow, Jeremy, Black, and Alive, though not as deep as Why Go, Garden, or Release.

Ok, so you guys want me to change it to "why go"? I can do that but then I get to go back and make you change your answers too simply because I didn't think they were "deep" enough. I thought we all agreed this was subjective. Unless it's a really obvious song that shouldn't be on here why nitpick? Also, based on part of your reasoning at least, opening tracks can't be deep cuts and that's just pure nonsense. It has at least made me reconsider other choices but I think i'll just bow out of this thread instead.

But you know what? I could easily complain about too many Queen songs on here or too many songs per artist in general for certain artists. This is supposed to be fun. I don't think it's something that should be taken too seriously.

Since there were no guidelines about how deep it had to be I don't think I did anything wrong by listing it and until I am found guilty I stand by that. :P I think it being the first track is pretty irrelevant too at least as far as my understanding of deep cut goes. I didn't think it was a term that was meant to be taken literally just a song that was obscure compared to other songs on the album. Ultimately this is rather arbitrary so while I won't say anyone can't complain I think it can get to be a bit silly after a while.

Now I guess I'm the one overthinking this but it's coming more from a defensive position.

It's fine with me to be on the list, I don't really care that much, I just wouldn't consider it a deep cut. I'm not a hardcore Queen fan by any means, but it's my favorite Queen song, and it's not particularly close. But you know way more about them and their fan base than I do, so I'll take your word for it.
