What happened then?

The OP has the date wrong.  It was the following year that Rush released their debut.

Wow.  Just not you cup of tea?
Basically yeah.

I liked Animals for some reason. Maybe because the first time I listened to it was the first time I had ever heard any of those songs.

I think radio overplay has a lot to do with what I like and what I don't.  If it is a radio staple, I am going to hate it.  With so much music out there to play, why do radio stations have to run certain songs into the ground?

There are a great many bands that I once liked or even loved who I now can't stand because of the radio.

Do Tom Sawyer, The Spirit of Radio, Limelight, Red Barchetta, and other Rush radio staples fit into your “If it is a radio staple, I am going to hate it” creed?

We all know the answer to that question.  As the song says, it's the root of all evil today.

The radio stations play the staples because they tend to be the band’s best work.  Not necessarily what the diehards would pick (e.g., Xanadu vs. Limelight) but great songs that even casual fans enjoy.

Pretty much.

I tend to disagree.

But really, I never listen to the radio anymore.  Unfortunately, having listened to so much of it in my youth I have many songs that I will forever be critical of.

I don't listen to terrestrial radio anymore, other than local sports talk.  If I listen to music it's really only Sirius/XM.

Give me an example of a staple of a band that you don't think is at least one of their best songs.  This is a topic that interests me, so I'm curious about your thoughts.

Really?

Yeah.  I like all of them.  Xanadu's intro is, IMO, much better than the actual song, although I do love it.
