I think I should give this band another shot

Big KISS fans, esp Mikael Åkerfeldt .. He mentions 'em numerous times here ..

Everyone in my band loves KISS

Yeah he likes KISS, Judas Priest, Maiden, Rainbow, Whitesnake and quite a few more.

He talks about The Elder a lot - he loves it ... But from that interview, Hotter Than Hell seems to be his favorite

I don't know if he was joking or not, but in the beginning of that interview, he says that he is one of the guys in Ghost ... is that true ??

I absolutely HATE the growl, but Mikel is beyond the cliche of this genre.

I know so many old school Opeth fans who hate Steven Wilson for ruining OPETH.

I personally am so happy the way Opeth has turned out.

Beautiful Modern Prog.

But even the growl from the past albums for some reason doesn't bother me.

Opeth puts amazing melody into their canon.

I fuckking love this band.

I can handle the candle of growl with Mikel.

All other growl Death Metal is shite to my ears.

Life goes on kids.

No I think he's joking about that. I think they've played on the same bill.

Although I've gone back and started diving deeper into their earlier, growly recordings, I still find the balance of material on Watershed to be the best representation of the band firing on all cylinders. It was their transition album that had strong elements of where they were coming from musically and direction we have now seen them take since.

Ghost Reveries was/is Opeth's peak for me. Push comes to shove, that's my favorite album and I was really stoked to have seen it live in its entirety a few years back. I love Blackwater Park, I love Damnation, I love Deliverance (especially the remastered version), I love My Arms Your Hearse and Still Life is a pretty good album. Basically, I think the run from My Arms Your Hearse through that album was their best period.

Truth be told though, Opeth has somewhat fallen out of favor with me in recent years. These days, I prefer their best friend (and fellow Swedes) Katatonia and have been more of my kind of rock/metal for almost 5 years now.

I can pick a favorite, but don't listen to them often enough to be able to rank their albums objectively. The first one I bought was Ghost Reveries, and I do like the balance of Watershed, but I had to go with Deliverance because the title track is awesome.
