A grand compliment coming from you, as you have the best taste in (and insight into) music.

Top ten bands that have never been in my kitchen... never mind, too broad. Rather, top ten not-at-all famous bands (even less famous than bands like Big Star, Modern Lovers, Teenage Fanclub, Wire, etc.)

The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy

Cinerama

Swell Maps

The Gun Club

Tones on Tail

Mission of Burma

Underground Lovers

Big Black

House of Love

This Mortal Coil (like The Golden Palominos, not really a band with a set lineup, but too awesome to leave out)

The top ten greatest bands of all time- without respect to relative popularity, technical proficiency, overall sales, top 40 hits, or influence- this will be fun.

With apologies to the twelve bands I'm about to erase, and the usual disclaimer that the ten who do make the cut might not have made the cut yesterday and possibly wouldn't make the cut tomorrow:

Midnight Oil

Rush

Bad Religion

The Clash

P.J. Harvey

Jethro Tull

Siouxsie and the Banshees

Iron Maiden

Drive By Truckers

Slim Cessna's Auto Club

Honestly, the above list leaves me a bit saddened. I could never whittle down my play list to ten bands in real life. It's just not enough!

That's an interesting proposition, Mosher. My lifetime ten-band limit playlist would include...

5 classic rock:

Zep

Floyd

Steely Dan

Genesis

Jethro Tull

5 punk/wave/alternative:

Midnight Oil

X

REM

English Beat

Talking Heads
