Listing one album per band or else my list would be all Radiohead, The Church and Sufjan Stevens. In no particular order:

 

XTC -- Wasp Star (Apple Venus Vol 2)... Andy Partridge is a genius. A difficult genius, but a genius.

Wire -- Send... Combined with the best of Read & Burn vols 1 and 2 makes up one of the best post punk releases ever.

The Church -- After Everything Now This... beautiful, slow-moving soundscapes; very different from what came before and after.

Radiohead -- Hail to the Thief... edges Amnesiac, though Kid A's high points are among Radiohead's very best.

The Wedding Present -- Take Fountain... as Send hailed the return of authentic Wire, so did Take Fountain The Wedding Present. Still the high point of their second phase (after the interim Cinerama phase).

Sufjan Stevens -- Come on Feel the Illinoise... best-reviewed album of 2005, for good reason, though I often prefer the more minimalist Seven Swans.

Johnny Cash -- American IV: The Man Comes Around... said farewell in style.

Elliott Smith -- From a Basement on a Hill... usually posthumous albums are a weak patchwork reflection of an artist's work, but this collection is strong. RIP

Rush -- Vapor Trails... My favorite post-Terry Brown album.

Gorillaz -- Demon Days... I don't like much else of heard from this guy (and revolving guests) so it must have been the Danger Mouse production.
