]Like Earl says, there's an A+ two-hour movie in there, it's just bogged down by an extra 40-min of pointless effect and really dumb storyline choices.

Finn and Rose had way too much screen time. Unless Abrams comes up with some big things for those two characters, they're just filler.

When there is no romantic sideplot, how do they make a 2+ hour Star Wars film? It can't just be the Jedi duking it out with the Sith....or could it?

They have made Star Wars films without romantic side plots: A New Hope and Rogue One, both very enjoyable movies imho.

I see a possible Rey-Poe "engagement" in Episode IX. She's gonna fall for that impulsive, reckless fly-boy .....

They met in the last few minutes of LJ and you’ve already got them engaged in Episode IX?!

That’d be crap!

I mean, there’s a good chance it’ll happen!!!

Hope not but it’s got a fair 50/50 shot of happening!

I heard this movie was f***ing shit and I have every reason to believe it.

There are only three star wars movies as far as I'm concerned, but this one being the worst yet? makes sense to me.

Keep on funding, guiz, let's try to get to episode 23 by the time I'm in a wheel chair. :eyeroll:

Oh, they're gonna "engage" each other, that's for sure.... ;) ;) Episode X will have Jedi younglings running around everywhere.....

Survived Day Two of the Prequels revisit. My mother insisted..... Watched Episode I yesterday, Episode II today, Episode III tomorrow.

My main job is to keep my mother on the same page with all the goings-on in the entire series.

And I am going to be completely honest here....0-2 from John Williams. Anyone can rehash old scores. Nothing on the line of Duel of the Fates. Nothing even sniffing that level. Ironically NONE of Williams three fine prequel scores were nominated for an Academy Award (whatever else you think of those films), but his very blasé TFA score was and this probably will be too. Unbelievable.

I've still never watched a Star Wars film from start to finish. I think 20 minutes is the longest I've lasted.

That’s how I am with Lord of the Rings. I tried the first one 2 or 3 times and fell asleep every time in about 20 minutes.

I saw about 5-10 minutes of part 2 before I just walked out of the room.

I saw the last 30-40 minutes of part 3 and that bastard of a movie wouldn’t end. It just wouldn’t end!!

That's how I feel with nearly every Marvel movie.

NOTE I SAID NEARLY!!

Saw it a second time yesterday. My son talked mom into going to see it (closet fan for her kid). My thoughts and my sons still hold at a B+ and my wife liked it. She doesn't hold back on the prequels or Rogue One. On the way home she asked what people didn't like in the movie. When we told her she replied, "So all of you suspend disbelief about the force, noise in space, light speed and the people are just fine after the jump. But yet someone gets upset over bombs and gravity?" You're all a bunch of nerds!

My issue is the abysmal editing and flow (like a clogged shitter). It’s a poorly constructed film.

Saw it a 2nd time. First half felt slower but the 2nd half was even more kick ass. The Rey/Kylo lightsaber duel, the silent light speed crash into Snokes ship, and the final battle on Crait. Really good stuff.

Cons: Mary Poppins Lea, the Casino stampede, and some choppy editing. Apparently the first rough edit was 3 hours long. i wonder if that flowed better.

I still give it a solid B.

Mary Poppins Leia

Many have said this, but I didn't have a problem with it at all.

She's a Skywalker, and she has had over 30 years to learn the ways of the Force. Why couldn't she use the Force to save herself from the vacuum of space?

I think it's the way the shot was executed. Almost looked like an afterthought. All she needed was an umbrella and I would've heard, "Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down". That scene and the "I'll hold" scene were the two I had the problem with...

Exactly. I agree it is poorly constructed. Thats why the first half esp. stunk. The bombs in space and Mary Popins in Space did not help things for me. Made me roll my eyes the fist time I saw it. When I saw it again last night it just made me cringe for the movie. I understand certain things (noise in space) are not accurate but for movie making and presentation you accept them. But certain other things - no. And floating around like that, well thats one of the things that goes over the line.

But the larger point is that the movie is a poorly constructed mess. Want to like it more but can't.

Finally getting around to tossing my 2 cents in on this mess of a movie. I very generously gave it a B-. Could have graded it lower.

I actually saw it the 2nd night it was out in the same place I saw The Force Awakens, R1, Return of the Jedi, Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars in. The theater is a cool place - built in the 1920's.

Anyway, IMO, this is almost 2 movies. The first half plus is just a mess. Its disjointed, jumps around, diologe is not great, character development stinks. As somebody else pointed out, how to you drop bombs in space? I was looking at my watch trying to figure out when I would leave.

Then the movie picked up a little and when Rey was in the throne room and somebody (not her) said to another character "I see you taking you lightsaber and striking down your greatest foe" (In case you have not seen the movie I will spare some details) at that point, well it went nuts. The place was packed and you just got one "Holly Spit" after another "Holly Carp" after another "OMG" after another "whoa" after another "Wow" from the crowed.

From that point on it was very good. I will probably chance seeing it one more time in the hope that the first half gets more to my liking but I don't hold out much hope.

Did I like it more than any of the other movies? Yes. More than The Empire Strikes Back (for some reason I have just never liked that one). More than episodes 2 & 3. Less then The Force Awakens - although its close just because that was so much like the original. Less than Return of the Jedi, Less than episode 1 (close). Way less than the original & R1 (which may be my favorite of them all.

That's about what i would say. the 2nd half is much stronger than the first.

i started noticing what a slog the first half is on my 2nd viewing.

actually i have to say. They could cut the whole resistance thing and make this story about just Rey and kylo and i feel it would be stronger. maybe i'm wrong. but i feel it would be better. Cause i felt everytime it cut back to the resistance i kinda deflated a bit.

But now that my fan hype is done. the realistic grade should be C+ To a B-

film tried to do a bit to much where TFA actually kept it much simpler. Repeating stuff aside, lol

Mick

I saw it again last night and I think you are on to something. If it had been mostly about Ray, Kylo & Luke it would have been much better. Even that could have been handled somewhat better (IMO).

Finn, Rose, the search for a code breaker & the casino just felt like a waste of time & movie. A pity since Finn's character (a storm trooper deserter!!) has (IMO) a great deal of potential. But just not utilized properly here.

I agree that it deflated the movie every time they went back to the resistance. On the plus side, Mark Hamill has generally not been in many folks book as a great actor but I did feel that he did a very good job in this movie.

I originally said that I was giving it a generous B-. Having seen it again, I think a C is more accurate (but still perhaps a bit generous) and I the only move I would rank it above is Attack of the Clones (episode 2). Note - this would leave in a tie with Empire Strikes Back.

I'll give you three guesses where the "sci" in "scifi" is from.

But more importantly once a universe is created and the parameters are set, good fiction remains true to those parameters. That's what makes Azimov so good, for example.

Nothing can survive in a vacuum. Even RUSH know that.

More like space fantasy.

Not sure how they could have filmed the Leia in space thing any differently. I'm guessin' she's frozen solid, so she's going to look like a static image moving toward the ship. If they had shown it a different way, I'm sure people would have still gone on about how "unrealistic" it looks. You either suspend your disbelief, or you don't. People who are too critical really suck the fun out of things. The makers of Star Wars are going to get dumped on no matter what they do.
