Right after watching this, one of my friends suggested that the master code breaker on that casino planet recommended by Maz Kanata should’ve been Lando “Billy Dee” Calrissian instead of the stock gambling looking guy we saw. Lando would’ve fit in perfectly as that kind of player/character AND known & recommended by Maz. They could’ve still used Benicio Del Toro’s character as is but JUST have Lando in that very brief gambling scene where Finn and Rose see the master code breaker - an old Billy Dee Lando laughing, gambling, and enjoying himself.

Hell, I would’ve been really good with NOT having Del Toro in there at all and bringing back Lando Calrissian as the master code breaker who helps them (minus the Del Toro character screwing over Finn & Rose bit). That could’ve been the way to bring back Billy Dee’s Lando into this trilogy. Besides, with the Han Solo prequel coming up it wouldn’t have hurt if Lando (even an old Lando) were in Last Jedi.

I thought the whole code breaker sequence was confusing and didn't lend much to the story. It could have but I think it was a missed opportunity. I really like the idea of involving Lando.

Also, the idea of a James Bond style character might be interesting which makes me wonder if they're going to bring the guy in the casino back in episode 9. Maz really talked him up and it seems to me to be a huge waste of character development if they don't.

Just read in Wikipedia that Lando was “briefly considered” as being the codebreaker but ultimately they went with Del Toro’s character...who betrayed our heroes similar to Lando in Empire.

I can see a possible return of DJ in Episode IX. The Resistance is desperate enough to need DJ's services again, and they may make it worth his while....

Probably. Would he turn into a good guy a la Lando?

I don’t like Del Toro in these kinds of roles. I prefer him in dramas such as Sicario.

I don't think DJ will be another Lando. I can see the Resistance using him, while being ready for another betrayal. They'll get payback. :ebert:

Sounds about right. But who knows? They’ve paralleled the original trilogy with this trilogy so far except when they haven’t

I got to say this is the most split Star Wars film i've seen.

i saw it twice and the more i think back on it and how things went down. my Enthusiasm for the film is kinda dying.

i will not be seeing it again......i'm just gonna wait till it comes out on DVD.

so we'll see.

Will you go back and change the grade you gave it?

I’ve been on the fence about seeing it a second time because I wasn’t that jazzed about it after the first viewing.

Any other movie which I had given a B- grade wouldn’t get a second chance in the cinema so why should LJ?

I probably shouldn’t see it again until DVD.

Well.......i do think my b plus was a tad to nice.

the whole middle bit with finn and Rose really drags the film down and kills it's momentum.

I'm not sure i really like what they did with luke either looking back. i will need another viewing eventually.

Finally getting around to tossing my 2 cents in on this mess of a movie. I very generously gave it a B-. Could have graded it lower.

I actually saw it the 2nd night it was out in the same place I saw The Force Awakens, R1, Return of the Jedi, Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars in. The theater is a cool place - built in the 1920's.

Anyway, IMO, this is almost 2 movies. The first half plus is just a mess. Its disjointed, jumps around, diologe is not great, character development stinks. As somebody else pointed out, how to you drop bombs in space? I was looking at my watch trying to figure out when I would leave.

Then the movie picked up a little and when Rey was in the throne room and somebody (not her) said to another character "I see you taking you lightsaber and striking down your greatest foe" (In case you have not seen the movie I will spare some details) at that point, well it went nuts. The place was packed and you just got one "Holly Spit" after another "Holly Carp" after another "OMG" after another "whoa" after another "Wow" from the crowed.

From that point on it was very good. I will probably chance seeing it one more time in the hope that the first half gets more to my liking but I don't hold out much hope.

Did I like it more than any of the other movies? Yes. More than The Empire Strikes Back (for some reason I have just never liked that one). More than episodes 2 & 3. Less then The Force Awakens - although its close just because that was so much like the original. Less than Return of the Jedi, Less than episode 1 (close). Way less than the original & R1 (which may be my favorite of them all.

That's about what i would say. the 2nd half is much stronger than the first.

i started noticing what a slog the first half is on my 2nd viewing.

actually i have to say. They could cut the whole resistance thing and make this story about just Rey and kylo and i feel it would be stronger. maybe i'm wrong. but i feel it would be better. Cause i felt everytime it cut back to the resistance i kinda deflated a bit.

But now that my fan hype is done. the realistic grade should be C+ To a B-

film tried to do a bit to much where TFA actually kept it much simpler. Repeating stuff aside, lol

The Empire Strikes Back (for some reason I have just never liked that one).

Talk about leading the reader. If you you would've lead with that I could've rendered your entire post null and void... ;)

Saw it tonight. I gave it a solid B. I would rank it 4th or 5th best In the series. The plot is darkest we'll see. It's The rebellions and the Jedis darkest hour. They Tried To lighten it up as much they could Sometimes it seemed forced, but some felt natural like the scene with Chewbacca around the fire and those little Things whatever they were begging for his food and Chewy showed them no pity. lol Rogue one is probably my favorite. So many courageous gritty heroes and a inspiring heroin which were played perfectly by the actors. I thought Kylo ren was done better than before and Ray did a great job again. I was surprized by Lukes teleporting abilities and thought was smart. Saw it 3d and it was very cool at times. That star destroyer seemed to fly over our heads. And those bombs were magnetized btw. Edited by Inthend

It's SciFi! We can come up with any reason for how those bombers worked! :D Magnetic fields abound out there in and around those starships!

The plot is darkest we'll see. It's The rebellions and the Jedis darkest hour.

Episode IX will have to come up with some pretty major stuff, as the Rebellion is all but wiped out - no Fleet left, and a only handful of people left!

Of all the things I could’ve picked wrong with Last Jedi, how the bombers worked wasn’t even a consideration. There are bigger fish to fry and all of that.

As for the Rebellion being wiped out and only a handful of people left, they’ve got pals in the galaxy (who haven’t responded yet): ally Maz Kanata & her cronies surely will assist in some capacity in episode IX. Then there’s Chewy’s Wookiees who haven’t appeared since this series started. They’re due. Also, Lando could come swooping in with his scoundrel chums with further aid. Besides, who knows what other creatures or droids they’ll whip up for Episode IX to aid the rebellion? Hell, look how much damage the little ball BB-8 inflicted on the First Order all by his lonesome in LJ.

This main SW series is too much of a family-oriented experience for Episode IX to end on a dark note.

Loved the lightspeed into the 1st order command ship. I thought it should have been Leia and an injured Ackbar doing that with both their hands on the lever.

Yeah that’s true. But it wouldn’t have mattered since they still caught up at the end anyway.

Gets a A as Luke simply stole the show. Should have been a 2 hour movie. Just remove all of those stupid Jim Henson looking creatures. Like the one where Luke drinks green milk from a strange goose thing. Are those utters or testicles? Bizarre shit man. The stupid Leia floating in space and living. So dumb. The Fair Godmother of Star Wars. Those stupid big lama deer animals on the casino track and then they escape to freedom. Disney did The Force Awakens for guys my age who grew up with this saga. Now they are going to go into another direction. Fukk it! SINGLE FOR LIFE! HALF WAY TO DEATH!!!! Good luck with Episode 10, 11 and 12! Jesus Christ Super Star Wars.........

Those crystal foxes on a salt planet? Thought they were back on Hoth for a second. Porgs of course. Beyond stupid. Poor Chewy couldn't even eat his dinner.

I just want to state for the record I've still not watched the original 1977 Star Wars flick all the way through nor any of the sequels or prequels. 20 minutes is as far as I've got into it, whether I came in at the beginning the middle or whatever. 20 minutes is my absolute Star Wars maximum! :hail: Edited by treeduck

Like Earl says, there's an A+ two-hour movie in there, it's just bogged down by an extra 40-min of pointless effect and rally dumb storyline choices.

But you know what i just realized...for the most part the actual dialogue wasn't plagued by the cringe-worthy lines I've come to expect. Quite the opposite, really. I think I'll go see it again...today, maybe.

Finn and Rose had way too much screen time. Unless Abrams comes up with some big things for those two characters, they're just filler.

When there is no romantic sideplot, how do they make a 2+ hour Star Wars film? It can't just be the Jedi duking it out with the Sith....or could it?

I changed my vote to a C+.

There really is a very good movie in there. but the first half is to slow and that Filler Rose/finn bullshit side quest sucks. and the awful Snoke charater going nowhere is pretty bad too

And not fond of Luke's Direction.

However.....still love the kylo/Rey stuff. and much as i dislike luke's treatment. his shit with Rey was very fun.

haven't seen the film again. but i saw it twice. and thinking back on it all......that is the deserving grade.

Yeah, I can understand those points.

Still, 40 minutes of pointlessness within a 150 minute movie is a bit over 25%. And that much fluff wouldn’t allow it to get an A grade imho.

Actually, I almost went to see it again last night but my crib was too nice and warm to venture out into the winter winds. I’m interested to see if LJ can get higher than my original B- grade.

They have made Star Wars films without romantic side plots: A New Hope and Rogue One, both very enjoyable movies imho.
