My Halloween project: pumpkin arcade

For a company Halloween pumpkin decorating contest, I decided to show off on behalf of my fellow developers, and built this pumpkin arcade game to represent our department.

It houses a Raspberry Pi microcomputer and a cheap 3.5 inch LCD tft display. The arcade buttons are wired to a generic usb control board, and sound is provided by a small internal USB speaker.

It runs the retropie emulator OS, and uses a Sega Genesis rom of the 1988 game "Ghouls 'N Ghosts". It is fully playable.

The exterior is made from two plastic pumpkins, which I cut to fit my needs, and then molded together with modeling putty. I then hand painted the putty to match the pumpkin color, and hand painted the game graphics on the front of the pumpkin.

As someone who has built their own arcade controller, I am impressed. Very imaginative and nicely executed. I imagine it's a bit awkward to play, given the narrow base?

It's not as bad as you might expect. I had the same concern, so I weighted the base down with a crescent edging brick, and it turned out surprisingly stable.

It really actually plays pretty nicely... for a pumpkin.
