Ged is still in denial - he calls Neil's retirement an "extended hiatus".

Yeah afraid you're right. Still hoping against hope Neil changes his mind I'd imagine.

He never referenced Neil Peart's retirement. Pure projection.

Who knows, maybe when Geddy returns from his extended hiatus, there will be another drummer in the band

Ged is still in denial - he calls Neil's retirement an "extended hiatus".

Or it could be simple optimism that Neil will eventually get bored of coloring with his daughter.

I wish I could be that optimistic about it but I don't think he will come back.

No he didn't. He clearly says the word "I" in reference to his extended hiatus. Maybe he's personally taking a break from pursuing any big musical commitments for a while.

Regardless of how he refers to Rush's status, he's certainly not moping around at home. He has more than enough interests to fill the rest of his life. That's probably the 'joy' of retirement...much less things you 'have' to do and much more things you 'want' to do.

Are you talking about Neil there? Or Geddy?

Guess we will find out tonight, but it surely seems to me by the tone of his answer that he is speaking of the band "ending". And it is only ending because Neil retired. I could be wrong but that is not what I got out of it. Again, we will see tonight.

So where does the "denial" come into play? You seem to be implying that Geddy can't accept Neil is retired.

i think him calling it an extended hiatus means that he's not pursuing any music at the moment but expects to in the future.

He should just call it what it is... He paused and chose his words carefully. He should just accept it. He should say, "Now that Neil has retired and Rush is over, I am traveling and pursuing new interests and hopefully soon I can find a new project to focus my energies." Or something along those lines. It just comes across like he cannot accept that his band is over.

For someone who stated that he was pretty much the last one who wanted the band to stop and still gung-ho about continuing, I would think he would have found another outlet. He had a solo album out within a few years of their previous hiatus. It's been that long now. And he says he can feel the clock ticking on his time on this earth. Even more of a reason to get moving on a new project. So that tells me that he seems to be almost holding out for some sort of Rush related project to surface and that Neil will change his mind.

I'm pretty sure he did.

Again, it's almost certainly the case that Geddy's hiatus doesn't have anything to do with Neil at this point. Like I said, perhaps Geddy is referencing a decision to take a break from any big musical commitments for the time being. I somehow doubt he was implying that he's just waiting around for Neil to wise up.
