The script has not been finished yet, but lo and behold, I have written a musical based on the songs of RUSH, with RUSH songs in them, that I do not expect to be on Broadway until probably long after I am dead. The title is Freewill in 2112, and here is the plot of the intended production:

It's 2112. America has been taken over by a monarchy obsessed with obedience, and has been transformed into an agricultural society with no transportation- and no technology. Everyone works from 9-to-5 and prays to the gods the rest of the time, and its citizens are completely devoid of freewill. The only people who believe in freewill, the Genalsikoffs, are looked down upon in society due to their beliefs. No one has it more bad than Thomas Genalsikoff and his uncle Benjamin (nicknamed "Barchy"), who are firmly against constant blind obedience and support democracy. But when a strange new alien force invades and enslaves the citizens of Hilltop, Connecticut, Thomas and Barchy must convince the citizens to do something that they haven't done since before the monarchy: rebel against tradition- and the authority- to assert their freewill.

Oh, and if I didn't already mention it, Barchy is secretly an android named B-CYGNUS-69 who is controlled by a hard drive and is a kind of technology forbidden by American laws at this point. He collects items from the past such as old cars and cell phones, and his human form was destroyed in a car crash, after which his hard drive- memories and all- were transferred to his red 1955 Ferrari Barchetta. And no, this is not a spoiler- it's mentioned in the very first scene.

So, what are your thoughts on this? The full plot is coming soon- BEWARE OF SPOILERS!! Plus, character information and posters! I hope you find this interesting!

Welcome oghond!   I hope you enjoy TRF! It sounds like you have put a lot of work into the musical! I'm a little confused by the Barchy character but I'm sure it would be clear if I saw the whole thing. Welcome!

I need to audition for this. Hello I’m community theater actor John Rogers. You may remember me from such musicals as A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Annie, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, 1776, The Music Man and Planet of the Apes: the musical.

Hello!

I am merely a stranger to you on here and many people on here hate me for being open and containing no filter.  I am educated.  Most think I'm on drugs.  LOL!   I have an English degree from St. Mary's College.  I run a successful business with my father.  I am a drummer of 36 years.  I've been around but I will be open and honest with you even "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend."  Trust me Froind.  There are a lot of wonderful people on here, but there are also trolls and haters.  You seem like a very cool human being.  I think it's awesome that you are a female too.  I was always bored reading Shakespeare in school so thanks to being a Rushhead i always found myself reading Ayn Rand instead.  Amazing that I graduated.  LOL!

Anyway I think it's incredible that you would post your intellectual and creative idea and spirt on here on a public forum.
I swiftly read through your idea and plot and I instantly thought of the the classic film "Metropolis" Meets Rush.
Alas, I think you have an excellent idea.
I can tell it's in it's genesis stage.  I too write.  I have an amazing screenplay written.  But here is my advice to you.
Don't share all of your ideas and concepts on a public forum.

Someone may steal your idea.

BE CAREFUL!

I am simply sending you a friendly warning.

I have been the joker on this forum for 11 years but I do have a serious side.

Be careful who you share your ideas with.

I think you have something here that will be excellent.  But please!  Protect yourself.  Not sure how old you are, not sure if you know copyrights ant trademark laws.

But please, listen to me.  If you are very serious about this amazing project, get it protected pronto.

I love the way you type in code.  I get it.  I do the same thing in my creative writing.

Just be careful.

We all have "Freewill" and that can be a problem within our own reality.

Humans have the "Freewill" to steal an idea and profit from it.

"Welcome To The Machine!"  I mean The Rush Forum!

Good luck with your writing.

You are on the right path!

RUSH ON!

Thank you!!!

Just so you know, I'm still in high school. The script has been in development for two years now. But I do understand about the whole copyright thing. With that said:

Freewill in 2112 ©2016. By oghond2112. I OWN THE BOOK. ALL RUSH SONGS USED ARE BY GEDDY LEE, ALEX LIFESON, AND NEIL PEART. DO NOT STEAL.

(Yeah, as you may have guessed, I don't exactly know copyright laws...)

Also, what do you mean by "type in code"? Are you referring to B-CYGNUS-68?

I know I should probably do that, especially since I know there are people who want to steal other's ideas. But I'm about to be 17 soon and am still in high school, and know little to nothing about copyright laws. That's why I said that the show will probably never be made until long after I am dead (or at least, not until long after Geddy, Neil and Alex are all dead). Besides, it's not just THAT copyright that I would have to worry about. Keep in mind that THERE ARE RUSH SONGS SUNG in this musical. The entire soundtrack is RUSH songs- it's a jukebox musical. And that will require me to have to get permission from the band, which will probably never happen.

Then again... I don't know if they did that with Queen when they made We Will Rock You, so who knows?

Here it is, the full plot of Freewill in 2112!!! BEWARE OF SPOILERS!!! THIS IS THE INITIAL DRAFT OF THE PLOT!!!

Copyright to the script owned by me. Copyright to the songs owned by... I think you already know.

Enjoy!

*SPOILERS AHEAD!*

Act One:
In the year 2112, Benjamin “Barchy” Genalsikoff, an android Barchetta, explains the tradition-holding ways of the town of Hilltop, and how everyone must play their part in society (“Closer to the Heart”). His nephew, Thomas, is also a Genalsikoff, a name which means “rebelling against tradition.” Thomas is looked down upon by his family due to his ways. He is seen by many as a working peasant (“Working Man”), but each Sunday rebels against the Motor Law. One Sunday, he meets Barchy’s two other nephews, and tells them the story of his previous ride through town (“Red Barchetta”). Unfortunately, he is caught by his strict parents, Samuel and Amanda Genalsikoff, who scold him. Despite Barchy’s protests, Thomas is forbidden from ever visiting his uncle’s farm again, and is sent back home.

At home, Thomas is expected to carry on the family tradition of being a plowsman, but Thomas dreams instead of a greater life where no one is blinded by tradition in the same way that an actor is blinded by fame ("Limelight"), which he explains to his uncle after once again rebelling against the law. Barchy is impressed by Thomas’ dreams, and encourages Thomas to follow them. Tragically, however, the next day Barchy is supposedly killed in a car accident. Thomas is heartbroken (“Afterimage”) and he and his family prepare for a funeral for Barchy. With Barchy gone, Thomas reluctantly agrees to carry on the family tradition. That night, he prays to the gods that Barchy be reincarnated (“Afterimage (reprise)”).

The next day, Hilltop is visited by strange space leaders, led by the arrogant KOKGNAB,  who proclaim themselves to be the modern-day “Tom Sawyer.” They announce that they will rule tyrannically over Hilltop, and Thomas is scared for his life. Needing to find his way out, he leaves for the one place where he can be comfortable: Barchy’s farm. There, he finds out that Barchy seemingly has been reincarnated, as the very same Barchetta car he once drove. However, Barchy explains to Thomas that he never was a human at all; he is actually an android from the past who somehow managed to survive, and kept his secret after being forced to do so by the monarchy. The news shocks Thomas, but he affirms that he still loves Barchy and will fight for freewill. Because Barchy is an android, the hard drive after his death was stored in his car and contains directions to new dimensions. The two manage to drive far away from Hilltop (“Fly By Night”) and into a place that they have never seen before: a place they call the New World.

Meanwhile, in Hilltop, Thomas’ parents are worried about their sons’ whereabouts, but are unable to search for their son due to them being used as slaves by KOKGNAB. In the New World, Thomas meets a young girl named Marcia, who is a skilled alien fighter, revealing that the aliens that have enslaved Hilltop are part of the Solar Federation, a group of five planets, each with their own alien race: the Geerps, the Yammers, the Syrinx, the By-Tors, and a mysterious fifth alien race. She invites Thomas and Barchy to the selection of the "Third Man of the Peacilion," to which they both agree. When Barchy explains Thomas’ story, the citizens of the New World hail him (“New World Man”) and plan to hold a festival in his honor. The festival is filled with music, and Thomas explains that while he does rebel against the rules, he’s always followed the tradition of never listening to music. Barchy explains to him “The Spirit of the Radio,” and Thomas finds music enjoyable. Marcia is attracted to Thomas’ rebellious nature, and decides to follow him back to Hilltop, where KOKGNAB and the aliens have assumed full control ("Grand Finale-2112").

Act Two
In Hilltop, Thomas and Barchy are shocked to find everyone enslaved by the aliens, and recount the history of the US under the “Unholy Document” (“Beneath, Behind, and Between”). Thomas’ parents see him and beg for help. Upon seeing Barchy, they are in shock, and Thomas promptly reveals Barchy's secret to his parents. This shocks and angers Samuel, who feels as though he was fooled. Despite Barchy and Thomas' protests, Samuel disowns his brother for being "a product against the Motor Law" and tells Thomas that he doesn't deserve to love him the way he does.

Saddened, Thomas runs off and explains to a concerned Marcia how he’s always been considered an outcast in his family (“Subdivisions”), with Marcia sympathizing with him. Thomas then contacts the citizens of the New World, who unfortunately have not been able to identify the alien race yet. Seeing how the town of Hilltop is unable to escape from the command of the space leaders due to their traditions, Thomas tries to get his family to rebel (“Something For Nothing”). However, it is in vain, and the family berates him. Unfortunately, this angers KOKGNAB, who decides to go on a killing spree.

An epic chase scene between Barchy and KOKGNAB occurs (“Marathon”), but in the end, Barchy is captured and enslaved, to both Thomas and Marcia’s shock. Finally deciding he has had enough of KOKGNAB, Thomas berates him for enslaving his family, and then plays the opening code of “YYZ.” To the town’s shock, it decreases the energy of KOKGNAB and frees Barchy, and Thomas realizes that music is the race's weakness. Barchy and Thomas manage to escape and travel back to the New World to stock themselves up on the YYZ code after they report this information to the mayor and citizens of the New World. Meanwhile, Thomas’ parents begin to realize they never should have berated their son and Barchy, with Amanda starting to realize that sometimes rebellion is a good thing.

In the New World, Barchy, Thomas and Marcia find the YYZ code. They then recieve news from the mayor that the alien race that has invaded Hilltop has been identified as the BNK race, a tyrannical dictatorship from space and the fifth alien race of the Solar Federation that had previously been unknown about. Realizing the danger his family and the citizens of Hilltop are in, Thomas and the others go back to Hilltop (“Fly By Night (reprise)”) and prepare to fight the BNK aliens to defeat them once and for all. An epic fight scene occurs, in which everybody is freed and Thomas is reunited with his parents. All of Hilltop sees this and realize just how horrible the alien race has been and all the problems they have caused (“The Trees”). In a final stand, Thomas gets the town together and demand they rebel against the authorities. The town states that they can’t, because as horrible as the alien race is, they must follow tradition.

At that moment, Barchy intervenes and reminds them that they live in America. He then proceeds to read an excerpt from the Constitution (which has been deemed unholy) and finally unlocks something in the town they never knew they had: “Freewill.” Together, the town decides to defeat the alien race and rebel against the authority. An epic final battle occurs, but in the process, Barchy sacrifices his hard drive to protect Thomas, and as he slips away, he confesses that although he may not have been Thomas’ real uncle, they had a friendship unlike any other that made Barchy not just a friend, but family (“Entre Nous”). Saddened by Barchy’s sacrifice, Thomas and the citizens decide to defeat KOKGNAB once and for all. By using the power of music (“Anthem”), the BNK race is finally defeated.

After KOKGNAB’s defeat, Barchy appears to be gone for good, and the whole town, especially Thomas' regretful father, mourn his loss. However, Thomas soon discovers that Barchy’s hard drive was used to fuel his guitar, and enters a part of his guitar into Barchy’s hard drive slot. Much to his joy, this revives Barchy. The mayor and citizens of the New World return to their dimension, Hilltop once again becomes a democracy, Thomas and Marcia begin a romance, and the whole town realizes rebellion is a good thing, hailing Thomas, Barchy, and Marcia as heroes (“Finale: Something for Nothing (reprise)”).

I don't know whether or not I should add an additional subplot where Barchy is pursued by the monarchy or not. The script is currently at 120 pages- and I've just started writing Act Two. Act One was 109 pages.

What are your thoughts on the plot? Please let me know.

Fun fact about this musical: KOKGNAB's name is a RUSH reference.

Can anyone here guess the RUSH reference?

Someone help me out on this: isn't it true that anything sent thru the mail is automatically protected under copyright laws? Og, if that's the case then mailing it to yourself would be a good "quick and dirty" way of protecting it.
