Him and Eddie Vedder are my two biggest rock star heroes for staying true to their artistic integrity and not giving a f**k.  Fitting they toured together when Highway Companion and avacado album came out the same time.  Cried real hard an hour ago.  First Vegas and now this.  f**k you grim reaper.

RIP. Say hi to Howie, George, Roy, Cash and Garry Shandling for us.

I never was a fan back in the day but his music is definitely part of the soundtrack of my life. No way around it. As I have aged there is no way when I hear a Petty tune that I am not at least a little happier than I was before it came on. You can't ask for much more than that from music...RIP and thanks

I'm not really a fan, but a horrible way to go for a class act.

He died at home.  My eldest cousin just lost her husband to a heart attack at home.  There are much worse ways to go.

True that he didn't suffer with a terminal illness for months or years (that we're aware of).

Taking the music in. Deep in thought and reflection on a terrible day.

I had the pleasure of seeing Tom Petty perform in concert several times. Basic rock and roll. Tom Petty understood rock and roll better than most. Sincere. Consistently good.

Now it says he's still alive:

Quote

1:35 PM PT -- Sources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom's hospital room. We're told the family has a do not resuscitate order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live throughout the day, but he's still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer's death is inaccurate -- the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. handled the emergency.

The news media can't get much straight anymore.

One night this past January, when I thought nothing could get worse and would ever get any better, this video saved my life:
