:ranton: ^^^Re Crim's comments above, My main teams participation in the playoffs has been sporadic to non-existent (Florida and Detroit), but I still watch the broadcasts every year due to the excitement of the game. Not sure of team self promotion in other markets, but its significant for the Panthers. Advertising is advertising, although I could give a rat's azz about the official product X of the League, and they're only in it for the $$$ anyway.

To the media outlets, enough with these dullards you call "analysts". We need more Don Cherry's and Barry Melrose's and fewer Eddie Olczyk's.

I'm laying off the on-ice officials cause the more I curse them, the more rep!ay shows they've been right.

Finally, a real commissioner would help. :rantoff:

The NHL should forfeit its status as a major sport

That's already happened in all the big cities in America, and on sports talk radio. ;)

Sadly, I doubt hockey has ever been a major sport in the US. In the almost 40 years I have been a fan, hockey is always the last sport to get ink in the sports section, that's no surprise. At least for the time being, there are stories everywhere about the Knights, even NPR!! :laughing guy:

And I think this will always be the case. Despite the fact that the finals this year may be Vegas vs. Tampa Bay, I think the sport is a tougher sell in places where ice never forms naturally. I also think that while most of us can't throw a baseball 95 mph, or run a 4.3 40 yard dash, we can throw a baseball and run. So we grow up playing baseball and football. The ability to skate is much more rare, and I think affects the sport's popularity.

The announcers are saying Reaves was a good pick-up for Vegas before the playoffs. I give up!

He has bounced around from teams but has found a place where he fits in...it is sometimes just the chemistry and he and Chicago weren't a good fit.

Thankfully, Reaves never played for the Hawks. He's been a goon throughout his career, and I just found it funny that he scored a goal, and the 'experts' showered him with praises.

The NHL should forfeit its status as a major sport if they let an expansion team win in its first year.

Bring back the days of the first year Capitals and KC Scouts.

Are you saying this is fixed? The fact that this hasn't happened since 1968 show how unlikely it is to happen but why is it such a bad thing? It has brought some good publicity for the sport of hockey at least for the time being, so I count it as good. Yes, it is more than likely that next year that will all go away when the media goes after the next shiny object but it is such a great story. I always have loved the old underdog winning story in sports and this qualifies to the max.

It was also a not so fortunate time for the team to have their first home game right after the horrific shooting spree there in Vegas. The team was able to connect with the community and offer support (and they are doing it still out of the glare of the cameras) that may have solidified the will of the team to work hard and play to win. This has been a success for the NHL but there is no way they could have forseen these events to their advantage. So you don't like Vegas, I get that but to imply their success it is somehow suspect is a bit of a stretch.

What in what I said implied it was fixed?

What I DID say is that it shows that success is more random than it should be (in my opinion), that the expansion process was far too generous, or, as is probably the case, both. As such, it shows that the skill level to play and assemble a team is far more evenly distributed than in sports, and results are more random. I see this as more of a bug than a feature. Others may not.

Obviously the fact that I hate Vegas means that I'm less likely to enjoy their success, but the above holds no matter where the beneficiary of success resides and to me is a problem whether they're in Las Vegas or Hamilton. It's more the result of a flawed process or of a random nature than true greatness.

This is not to say that I prefer the NBA; that has the twin problems of the outcomes of playoff series as far too predictable and the fact that one star can make a team all by himself.

You have nothing to worry about!

The way I see it, given history, there are three ways the Capitals can lose tonight:

1. The Bolts score 5 in the first 10 minutes. Game is over before the first intermission.

2. Bad officiating blunder in the favor of the Bolts results in a late 3rd period goal breaking a low scoring tie.

3. 0-0 in double overtime where a Capitals D zone turnover (probably Orpik, maybe Orlov) ends up in the Capitals net.

I am voting for number 3 because it is the most heart wrenching.

Oh and Vegas is winning the cup this year regardless of what happens tonight.

No need. They have a whole team full of players plenty capable of making horrendous mistakes.

Orpik went to BC, so it won't be him. :)

Definitely not hoping for your #3 scenario (except for the Bolts winning) as that will make 5am roll around soooo much earlier than it does already :scared:

Your # 1 scenario I have to admit would be lifting the roof off the house! I do intend on being the THUNDER for every score! & of course I am rooting for me Sticks of Fire to be on the upper hand in that department.

Your #2 seems to be the most realistic! I truely believe the victory of these two fine clubs will rest on who is percieved to make the most mistakes thus giving their foe more power plays & who gets the lucky bounces...

One thing for sure this game is going to be FULL ON!!!!

As far as your final prediction I truly believe if Tampa advances tonight we will go all the way!

Only time will tell!

Let's GO Lightning!!!

OMG yeah, just like Joe Buck with Fox. I cringe with the knowledge that Thursday evenings are in the crapper this fall.

Opening goal aside, that was a bad period for Washington. They are skating alright but they aren't playing physical or finishing checks. Now they look like they are going to try and sit on and protect a 1 goal lead and that can only go badly for them.

They need to start possessing the puck and muddying up the neutral zone. Stop giving Tampa so much zone time and for f***s sake Braden, hold on to the puck!

TSS, congratulations to your team.

They haven't won anything yet.

Ummm yes they did! Hats off to the Caps becoming Eastern Conference Champions! My bolts did come back from behind to make it a series but just didn't have the determination to win it. Oh well there's always next season!

Let's GO Golden Knights!!!

I'm sorry the Bolts didn't make it all the way for you, Cmm ! Do you think they will make a lot of roster changes? They should be fun to watch next year! And go Knights and Fleury!

I do not see any major changes on the horizon. The core group of this team is good and relatively young. I think most of the improvements that need to be made are needed through coaching. Not meaning cleaning house but instilling a sense of urgency or being able to make changes on the fly when things are going south. Prime example being down by 3 at the start of the 3rd and taki g 9+ minutes to record a single shot on goal...

That's all right. This time you don't have to worry about Yzerman and Fedorov. It's Reaves and Marchess...oh, forget it.

Tampa Bay vs Winnipeg in the final. Maybe. ;)

I'm thinking Washington v. Las Vegas. Sin city against the place with all the tacky casinos. :)

OK, the loser has to start a thread on SOCN saying how great Obama was as President. Deal?

I won’t hold you to this Robert. :)

Wait a minute. You never agreed to this. All you did was giving me a 'like.' That's not enough. :tsk: Although, I would consider it, just to confuse the hell out of JARG. :P
