DistantEarlySignals
Test For Echo is a *Super Bad* Album fixed^^^^^ lol i love T4E, Driven, half the world, resist TCOR, Totem, etc are decent songs just not as strong as the rest of the catalog... dog years sucks, carve away the stone is bad but not as bad as people say it is, virtuality is dated but the riff is cool so i just keep the RushOddities.com version which omits the net-boy bit overall a decent album, in the bottom half but not too bad. Gets too much hate Edited August 21, 2017 by DistantEarlySignals
jnoble
it's bland. Mostly inoffensive but bland. Like the musical equivalent of eating half melted vanilla ice cream. Say what you will about Vapor Trails, but that album has a million times more energy and passion then TFE
nicky6
ok, TFE will always be special to me. cause it was my first rush tour, and the first time really getting heavy into rush where they had this new album coming out. I agree with a lot of these comments as I got older though.
BenjaminW
Test for Echo never really grew on me. I've always liked the title track and Driven the most but I can listen to and appreciate the other tracks but they don't fall into the kind of Rush I like. MMCXII
I loved this album from the very first listen. Although it does contain the worst lyrics in any Rush song out there with "Dog Years". Aside from that, I agree with you about the production. I love Alex's playing on this record.Loved it from the first listen too.Think Driven is an absolutely awesome song and was very disappointed when it wasn't included in the R40 setlist. Like pretty much most of the rest of them too.Best production of anything in their latter career and it ain't even close.Maybe best produced album of theirs ever.Am I the only person in the world that gets that Dog Years was humor, meant to be funny and not taken seriously? No you're not the only one! I get it too but unfortunately Peart's personality prevents him from being funny.. Picture Mr Spock telling a joke.. Kirk would just roll his eyes and Bones would probably throw an insult at him lol

ytserush
Love the acoustic guitar on this one. each sounds sounded different too. Counterparts which I also like sounded kind of the same a lot of times. Not a lot of variety in how it sounds. On Test For Echo, they corrected that. maplelevy
TFE is pretty much right in the middle of my rankings. Would say it's slightly underrated musically, but certainly nowhere Neil's best lyrics. Favorites - Driven (rocks), Totem (catchy), Resist (live, acoustic version is amazing), CATS (see Totem)Not a big fan of Dog Years and Virtuality
RUSHHEAD666
"Test For Echo" is a super fun cd to toss into the Pacific sea! "Time And Motion" is good, but part of me wants to skip this aluminum disc into the Pacific Ocean! "Caved in cop cars" Even Rushhead can write a better alliteration than that shit. The Neil Peart Professor poops porcupine penises profusely per Prime Mover and promotes porn pensively pending Permanent Paves.
jnoble
Even at the time it came out ,two of my huge Rush fan friends were expressing disappointment upon first listen. I remember my one friend describing playing it at work and someone else listening along remarking "this isn't going very well, is it?" at some point

I blame Roll The Bones' Exotica Chaotica Hindu Muslim Catholic Creation Jack Relax playful lyrical experimentation. I believe this led to the below average lyrics of Counterparts (though I liked most of that album's music) which then continued on TFE. Snap! <----- Not me! I'm quoting Peart again! :P
New World Kid
I like Test for Echo a lot. I'm more likely to listen to it than anything pre 1980. It sounds very mature. Nothing here is showy, everything is serving the music. I personally like the lyrics to Half the World.
lifeson90
Just had a blast of Totem Mann just listen to Al at work on that track Is like he communicating with the Gods in another language or something Just the coolest, most imaginative guitarist there'll simply ever be
rolemodlin
Outside of the obvious lyrical stumbles that others have already pointed out, I think this one is a really good album. It's not my favorite but it's not my least favorite either. I love Alex's guitar tone and I personally think the production is top notch. Once again, other than some cringe-worthy lyrics in places, I have no real qualms with it. Edited September 6, 2017 by rolemodlin

It's like Alex suddenly remembered that he was a killer guitarist.

Time and Motion seems far more interesting.

Totem would have been awesome to hear live. I'm so grateful it didn't end them, but Test For Echo would have been a fine swan song. Blows my mind they even upped their game in the next decade.
