I love The Song Is Over and Getting In Tune. They break the fourth wall in the best way possible.

"I'm singing this note cuz it fits in well with the chords I'm playing..."

A band that can write songs like that is a band that doesn't take themselves too seriously, which is a really good thing.

The Who was my first concert in 1982! I was 14! Saw The Clash open up! "Combat Rock" Tour! It's still in my head like it was yesterday!! Kenny Jones!

I saw The Who again in 1991 with Simon Phillips on the drum kit. 10th row. Blew my mind.

Last year I saw The Who on Pete Townshend's 71st birthday! They blew my mind yet again!!!!! Starkey! Better than his dad!!! JMO!!!!

So this summer I am taking my amazing parents up to Lake Tahoe to see The Who! August 16th!!! I can't wait!!

I am writing this on this thread because I think it could be one of the stupidest polls ever written in Rush Forum History, and I've written a ton of hits on here and a ton of shits too!

"Who's Next" is fuckking PERFECT!

There isn't one bad or weak note on this record!!

For my fuckked up ears which still work, "Who's Next" is like "Hemispheres." MASTERPIECE!

Then again I am a WHO WHORE!

I will not partake in this poll.

Every album by The Who up to "IT'S HARD" is PERFECT!

Every Pete Townshend solo album is PERFECT!!!!!

"It's Soft" is the sequel to the "Who's Next" album!

Signed,

VIAGRA

One thing about The Who back in the day, their intro bands were the best.

When I saw them, they had Golden Earring.

Nice "L!" "Moon Tan" is a great record!!

Any band that writes a mini opera about a girl getting shagged while her man is away definitely doesn't take themselves too seriously! :-D

TIMELESS FRIGGIN MASTERPIECE.

IMO, THE best rock album ever made. Period. World without end.

And yet it could have been even better.

Love all the songs, but Love Ain't for Keepin' is my "weak link" here. PURE AND EASY should have been on it instead.

Best track vote went to WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN. Iconic in every way. But many songs are right behind it (especially Baba and Behind Blue Eyes).

And yet, the deep album cuts are classics too. The Song Is Over... Getting In Tune... man!!!

Thank you. SO well stated.

"Pure and Easy" is in this category too. It was really one of the centerpieces to Lifehouse, and since it's quoted in "The Song Is Over", I feel like it really should have been on "Who's Next" too. Where to sequence it, I'm not sure, but it should be there!!

How about, what sounds to me like - doesn't mean it is, the violin after Roger sings the last line in Baba O? Pete had a way of using instruments in a poignant way in a song.

Kind of like Ben in Losing It.

Yeah, that's a violin for sure. The guy (I forget his name) who played that part on the original record was featured a little in "AMAZING JOURNEY-THE STORY OF THE WHO".

It's on YouTube... it's a wonderful documentary.

And the CLASSIC ALBUMS episode of Who's Next is essential!

I believe, if I remember correctly, the violin was Moonie's idea. I read that somewhere. And it does fit very well.

How about the intro to Baba O'Riley? Has to be on the best ever!

For the longest time, I thought the name of the song was Teenage Wasteland and couldn't understand why it wasn't on the album everyone told me it was on.

That synthesizer...then the piano comes in... then Moonie... DAMN!

Lorraine, after you get done listening to Who's Next, please check out the three tunes I posted... You're likely already familiar with them, but they're worth revisiting :)

I just saw them. When I finish the album, I will listen to those three tunes. :)

Nicky Hopkins on the piano on "The Song Is Over" and "Getting in Tune". But it's Pete on Baba O'Riley.

As far as I am concerned, Ian Stewart and Nicky Hopkins are Rock Piano Gods.

Nicky Hopkins on The Rolling Stones Stray Cat Blues.... great

Nicky Hopkins... Unsung hero. Played on some Stones stuff and played the piano part on the Beatles' "Revolution" too.

Some of this veers into 'dad rock' territory for me. You can hear the swishing of bell-bottoms in some of the songs. :P

And I kinda miss that shitty compressed drum sound from Sell Out and Tommy - wall of cymbals and ringing toms and no hi-hat anywhere.

(note: I am not racist against hi-hats. I just find it interesting that Moon dispensed with one for a brief period. Most drummers would not do this!)

If the poll included the bonus tracks (Naked Eye!), I would've rated it higher.

I'm so glad you all know him. I've loved him since I've been in high school.

He is an unsung hero. I was so sorry to hear when he died. Such a talented man that made good songs great with his piano.

I hate that term. I mean, I was born in 1972, but I love all the stuff my dad listened to, and I never thought of it as "dad rock". I didn't care, it was just good music. Heck, I even like some "granddad music". If it's good, then it shouldn't be disparaged with terms like "dad rock". Music is music.
