JohnRogers
Oh I have issues with THIS list! The position of Queensrÿche's Operation Mindcrime, multiple Crötley Mü picks and NO Rush.

Entre_Perpetuo
Predicted picks 1 and 2 in half second, was exactly right. Too easy. Also, Van Halen? Metal??? Not really quite even hair metal... which apparently counts on this list for mere namesake. Also, Images at 97, and Mindcrime at 67? Yeah, right. But yay, Anthrax made the top 20!

I get how influential they are to the genre (and almost anything with a guitar solo in it), but they are definitely not metal in my book. Hard rock for sure. To me, that's like putting an AC/DC or an Aerosmith album on the list.

J2112YYZ
Metal is a debatable term. Clearly even people who read this forum don't know what it is. Metal has too many subgenres. It makes opinions quite varied as to what is and isn't metal. But if bands like Poison and Rat are considered metal then you can damn sure call Van Halen that.

Lucas
One of the greatest metal bands ever http://i.imgur.com/xaDWiSB.jpg Rush isn't metal. With that line of thinking, then no metal existed pre-1980s ... Rush is not only metal, but they helped created the genre, the attitude and the belief .. They are the priests Without Rush, there is no Celtic Frost and no Voivod
J2112YYZ
One of the greatest metal bands ever http://i.imgur.com/xaDWiSB.jpg Rush isn't metal. Not completely. But listen to their 70s stuff. Plenty of metal style riffs and moments. VT, S&A and CA have a lot of metal going on as well.

They are the priests Without Rush, there is no Celtic Frost and no Voivod I disagree that having as huge of an influence on the genre as Rush or Van Halen did gives a band a pass into being metal. I get how heavy Rush were in the seventies. By 70s standards, 2112 and Cygnus book one are basically metal in parts, sure. But in general, 70s Rush is not metal, they're progressive hard rock. Dio once said the real difference between a metal band and any old rock band is the attitude. Sabbath had the metal attitude, Priest had it. Rush had a different attitude, one which was definitely not metal, it was just Rush. Totally unique.
