Entre_Perpetuo
Which big band leader (and which big band) do you prefer? As a saxophonist, Johnny Hodges tone gives me a stellar argument for Ellington, but Marshal Royal was a heck of lead in Basie's band as well.
theredtamasrule
The Duke had so many amazing compositions...tough pick but I'll go with Ellington.
Blue J
My answer is Ellington as well, but I prefer Count Basie's music overall.
vaportrailer
Of the two, Basie was the "King of Swing", as his orchestra was more dance-oriented.Whereas Ellington became more progressive in the scope of his material and arrangements. Ellington's "Far East Suite" is pretty friggin' swell. Ellington was a very forward thinking musician and a true original.
Lucas
Almost impossible to choose, but I have very fond memories of when my parents took us to see Count Basie a few times .. Plus, he's a fellow New Jerseyian GENE GENE THE DANCING MACHINE
ytserush
Kind of like comparing apples and oranges. Depends on my mood I guess.
