Rock songs that sound alike?

Recommended Posts

Because Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song is one of my favorites, I notice when I hear "it" other places. Which is a lot. The most blatant one I remember is Still Of The Night, by Whitesnake. Listen to the first 45 seconds or so- The rhythm, vocal structure and even a bit of the Whitesnake riff come right from Led Zepp. I like David Coverdale and all but Still was definitely "inspired" by Zeppelin.

Not really rock, but they sound alike:

Werewolves of London

Sweet Home Alabama

Kid Rock famously blended those into "All Summer Long"

10538 Overture - ELO (Later covered By Def Leppard)

Beyond The Realms Of Death - Judas Priest

Suite Madame Blue - Styx

A trifecta of very similar riffs. I have these 3 songs together in a couple of playlists because of this.

Stepping a little bit off course here... but it's an interesting story.

There was a band called The Jetzons who put out just one album in the early 80s before breaking up. Their keyboardist later went on to work with Michael Jackson, who worked for Sega on the audio production of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in the 90s.

Years after Sonic 3 came out, a compilation of lost tracks from The Jetzons was released, and it included a track called Hard Times that sounded awfully familiar to some music from the video game.

Your mileage may vary and I'm the first to admit I have bad ears after years of listening to speakers when bigger was better. I'm probably not explaining it very well, but the main thing is the underlying rhythm and bass line- the chunk-chunk -a-chunka in Immigrant Song. Listen to Still of the Night at :24 and :28- same tone and rhythm. The pacing and phrasing is also similar- Plant starts off Immigrant Song with that awesome wail and then jumps into a rapid vocal. Still Of The Night has a guitar slide take the place of the wail but them jumps into a similarly rapid paced syncopated vocal.

I dunno, "Still" just always reminded me of Immigrant Song but there are others, also. I'll have to try and remember, but there are others that remind me of Immigrant Song as well due to an opening wail and jump into a rapidly paced song. It could just be me, though. :P

This guy might explain it better but you are entitled to your own opinion. :ebert: There are pairs of songs that people say are derivative where I don't hear anything either. (My Sweet Lord and She's So Fine being one.)

This reminded me of something.

The in-game music for the first Doom in 1994, was clearly influenced by Judas Priest and Metallica. You can hear bits of both bands music throughout the game. If the sounds weren't constrined by the limitations of 90's PC MIDI hardware, the soundtrack to Doom would probably sound more like Nine Inch Nails, come to think of it. ...Then later in 96, Trent did the soundtrack for Quake. ;)

It's like Immigrant Song meets Black Dog but overproduced and with shitty drum sounds. :P

Zep salad! Sounded like a nod to "In My Time of Dying" in there too. Which was ripped off adapted from Blind Willie Johnson, along with Nobody's Fault But Mine.

Yeah, it's pretty evident, to me at least.

Howzabout a Canuck band called Rush?

Half the World

Peaceable Kingdom

Pretty friggin' similar, although one song is less shitty somehow. Rip-off artists. :tsk:

Bryan Adams' Run to You and Slade's Run Runaway both have the word, "run" in the title.

And Bon Jovi's Runaway!

Zep ripped themselves off. Listen to the first 10 seconds of Immigrant Song and The Wonton Song. Similar syncopated octave riff.

I still love The Wonton Song since it's got some weird chord progressions and a little funk stink to it.

Here they do it in concert by starting with Immigrant Song and going right into The Wonton Song.

Not classic rock but... Wire protested and there was a settlement which resulted in the credits being re-written. What I don't get is that Elastica had been pretty vocal about being Wire fans; so why not just be up front that the song is part tribute.

Other than the riff I think Elastica made the sing their own. But they did steal the riff. Love both songs.
