ILSnwdog
I'm making this thread in honor of my favorite spirit. I've never acquired the taste for whiskey, and I've really really tried. Tequila is fine with a little salt and lime. Vodka is OK. I love it in White Russians and Bloody Marys. But Gin is where it's at for me. I love gin and Tonics. My favorite? Oh, how I love Tanqueray 10. So smooth, with a hint of fruitiness. Not a fan of Bombay or Hendricks. But Tanqueray is the nectar of the Gods in my book!
treeduck
Not a big fan of any spirits really, none of them really taste good even with various mixers to dilute.

I cannot drink Tanqueray though. For what ever reason it makes me really sick. No problem with other types.
goose
In before Lucas! :dweez: And I love a gin and tonic, gin martini, gin fizz... Bombay Sapphire is pretty solid.
goose
Just east of here, in Fallon, NV (now home of the navy's Top Gun), there's a micro-distillery that makes a high-end gin that's getting attention. Our Barrel Finished Gin Limited Release No.1 is made with our best high-quality grains, which are complimented by juniper berries, citrus notes, lavender, and cucumber which are also sourced right from the ranch and blended with botanicals from around the world. Then aged in oak barrels for months.http://www.freyranch.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/barrel-finished-gin-frey-ranch.jpg http://www.freyranch.com/barrel-finished-gin/

Stormtron
Whiskey man here. Not a fan of Gin. Same here. I was given a bottle of Tanqueray once and thought it was awful. Of course I drank it anyway.
Ancient Ways
More than any other liquor I think gin really tastes differently based on the brand since so many aeromatic substances go into making it. I don't like tanqueray much either. My fave is Hendricks with tonic water. So damn good.

vaportrailer
I got into gin after hearing the Kinks singing about it so much. Tried the first glass, what the hell? Tastes like a spruce tree. Second drink was very agreeable, and I've been a fan ever since. Thanks, Kinks! "I'm drowning my sorrows in whiskey and gin!" As much as I love the gin and tonics, I've switched over to vodka tonics as I find them a little easier on the guts.I find some gins to be a little greasy (DeKyper, a Dutch gin, immediately leaps to mind), although crisp and delicious with tonic and maybe even a splash of juice on a hot ol' day...

Yes. All spirits are clear after distillation and it's the oak barrels that impart color to them be they bourbon, tequila or whatever.

thesweetscience
I haven't actually had gin in quite a few years. Maybe I should revisit it and see if my tastes have changed. Which brand of gin would be best to try for a guy who generally drinks scotch and bourbon neat?

Which brand of gin would be best to try for a guy who generally drinks scotch and bourbon neat?Try Tanqueray. If you don't like that, try Bombay or Hendricks. Tanqueray has a subtle fruitiness to it. Hendricks and Bombay are dryer.

Chronos
I'm not the biggest gin fan, but I've been playing around with it lately by teaming it up with Green Chartreuse. My favorite cocktail has been the Lumière: 1.5 oz gin1 oz St. Germain elderflower.75 oz Green Chartreuse.75 oz fresh lime juicea healthy dose of orange bitters (I've been using Fee Brothers) http://i.imgur.com/8Yd1Kqft.png?
The Analog Cub
Gin is also my hard liquor of choice. White Russians are tasty, I'm not a fan of rum or whiskey or the other dark liquors. If vodka is in my drink I don't want to be able to taste it. But gin on the other hand...I can pound many a gin and tonic in a night. So good! I'm honestly not too picky on what it is, I'm not able to pick out the differences. Seagrams or Tanqueray or whatever, I'll have it with either some tonic or Sprite.
