Original Y&T rhythm guitarist Joey Alves is dead at 63

He suffered from ulcerative colitis and other complications that led to his passing.

That leaves just Dave Meniketti as the only survivor from the original line-up.

isn't that what killed Glenn Frey?

He had that and had "complications" but the official cause of death was pneumonia. They often give that as the cause of death if it occurs because technically it is the thing that finally takes them out but it's often a kind of cop out when doctors don't know what the true cause of death is.

I've been dealing with this reality now for a few days.

Out of respect for Joey I didn't want to write this thread.

Thanks Pat for doing so and being a class act.

I knew Joey.

Not well, but enough to where he knew I was one of the band's greatest fans in the world.

He actually mailed me five guitar picks to my house years ago.

He was a sweet man and one hell of a guitarist.

He was more than rhythm.

He could kick man lead guitar players right in the fukking ass.

Damn it. I am so sad.

I knew Phil. I knew Leonard and Joey.

I could cry...

Ok I am.

I love Dave and Jill and Mike and John.

I wasn't going to the Fillmore show this month but I am now.

I have to support my second favorite band in the world next to RUSH.

FUKKKKKKKK!

Joey passed from ulcerative colitis.

Devastating......

I love you Joey.

I wil miss you

EARTHSHAKER IS ON NOW!!!!!!

JOEY!!! YOU ARE AN EARTHSHAKER!!!!!!

"I BELIEVE IN YOU!"

PLEASE "RESCUE ME" FROM THIS SADNESS!!!!!

I am so tired of my mortal mentor musicians dying.

Such is life.......

I never got into Y&T...but RIP to another great musician.

:rose:

I remember when Mean Streak came out, the crazy video was all over MTV. Dug it and I went and bought the album..

Couple months later, I'm at Zuma Beach and these two gorgeous girls are on the sand listening to a boom box .... I asked 'em what they were playing, and they said "Black Tiger".

Instant fan. GREAT album.

Once upon a time they were my fave band. Had a six album run that was perfect. I've seen them more times than I can even remember. A big part of my formative years.

Jesus, you kill my young soul.

I remember back in 1983. I was a nerd freshman in love with RUSH and about 2112 other incredible bands.

I was sitting in my English class bored out of my mind.

Our classroom was next to the senior parking lot.

I had a window seat.

All of the sudden some dude in a fuckking killer navy blue Camaro was cranking Van Halen's "On Fire."

I will never forget this memory as long as I live.

Anyway, like in an old school MTV video yet in reality, I beautiful hot blonde girl leaned over to me.

She said...

"I can tell by the way you are tapping on your desk that you are a drummer and love Van Halen."

I whispered back..... "I sure do....."

The blonde girl then echoed back into my awaiting earhole.....

"If you love Van Halen then you need to get "Black Tiger" by Y&T."

I said.....

"Who???? Y&T?"

She said...

"Yes!! Y&T!"

I thanked her before the teacher busted us for talking!!

"Hot For Teacher???"

Nope!! I was "HOT FOR TEENAGE OLDER HOT BLONDE GIRL!" LOL!

Anyway, right after the buzzer rang at school I raced on my bike to The Record Exchange in Walnut Creek Ca, 1983.

I picked up "Black Tiger" on vinyl.

I instantly fell in love with Y&T!

Of course I had to pick up "Earthshaker."

The Yesterday & Today stuff even back then in 1983 was so expensive and hard to find!!

It's so funny though.

So fast forward to 1984.....

I found out that "Grace Under Pressure" came out the same time "Meanstreak" came out!

I biked my ass downtown Walnut Creek and picked up both cassettes.

So do you see why RUSH and Y&T are my true true loves?

I am a broken record but of course you real Rush fans who waste your time reading my banter do know your shit right?

You know that Y&T opened for RUSH on the GUP Tour on the East Coast. Three weeks!!

Of course the uneducated, arrogant RUSH fan of that time booed Y&T off the stage.

Even Geddy and Dave Meniketti had it out backstage.

I know a lot of shit.

I am sure I have stared that story on here years ago.

Oh yes...

Dave and Geddy clashed.

Leonard Haze thought that Neil was overrated.

Knowledge is such a wonderful thing to share.

Or to waste.....

RUSH ON!!

Y&T RULES!!!!!

RUSH ON!!

Y&T RULES!!!!!

Only Dave remains!

Pat!

I went to the Fillmore in San Francisco! Kip Winger opened! He was WEAK!

But Y&T KICKED MY FUKKING ASS!!

I am friends with the band as you know so I was able to get backstage.

I talked to Dave for 20 minutes with my buddy. Also hung out with Nymann, Mike and the new bass player Aaron. I was not a fan of the new bassist until I met him that Saturday night. He was so cool and he can actually play bass and isn't a drunk with no no vocals. Aaron can do harmony and shred on the bass!

I am so blessed Pat!

Y&T KILLED IT!

I talked to Dave about losing Haze and Alves in the same year almost. He was so sad dude.

I was friends with Phil too! Remember Pat??? Phil Kennemore and his beautiful wife Hannah drove me home from the Concord Pavilion after the British Steel Album Tour. I had After Party passes for that one too! I met Scott Travis.

PAT!

I miss you!

I am so blessed!!!

I love that strangers on here who I have never met think I am just some drug addict jerk!

HAHA!

I am beyond blessed!

PAT!

So Sunday there was a Leonard Haze Tribute Concert in my own hometown of Concord!

Leonard's wife, daughter and even his mom showed up!

There were five bands!

The headliner was the HAZE XPERIMENT!

Dude! I used to be in a band in the 80's with the lead singer of Haze's old band!

Pat! The night got better!

John Nymann from Y&T and one of my good buddies came into the bar!

He showed his support and honor for Leonard!!!

Dude!

This is all true!!! I don't bullshit at all when it comes to ROCK AND ROLL!

Nymann gave me a pink Y&T pick! He said..

"Earl... I think you need a pink Y&T pick.." Classic! LOL! I know I'm so flamboyant and G@Y!

So right after that they handed John a fuckking guitar!

He jumped up on stage and played two songs with the Haze band!!

They played "ALCOHOL!"

Then went right into "DIRTY GIRL!!"

Pat!

I don't give a shit what others say.

I am pouring my excited heart about a band I have loved well... "FOREVER!" Get it?

My top two favorite bands in the world will always be...

RUSH

Y&T

Dave Meniketti was so nice to me!!!

I have my after party pass on my left nipple.

I asked Dave to sign my pass.

He said...

"Ok Earl.... I'm about to sign your nipple." I laughed and told him to go for it!!

I wish no ill will to any human being on this Forum.

I am just and excited guy and I live for MUSIC!

If you don't like my energy and my contribution to the Rush Forum please just put me on IGNORE!

I went through HELL as many as you on here know.

I am soooooooooooo HAPPY NOW!

The ups and downs are part of all our lives.

Just be strong and things will always get better for you!

RUSH ON!

But...

Even though Dave Meniketti is the last living original member, he is still PLAYING LIVE!!!!

You Y&T amateurs and RUSH wannabe fans do know that RUSH and Y&T were both "established" in 1974.

I bet Geddy and Alex wish they could break their pact and tour with a new drummer.

LOL!!!

DAVE MENIKETTI FUCKKING RULES!

I love his beautiful wife Jill too!

I'm seeing Y&T a lot this year. Their UK tour ends in my hometown! It's fate!

Earl are you doing the Mystic?

Fukk Jonny!

I miss your emails!

Dude! Who would have thunk that a guy like me who is no one special can become friends with my second favorite band in the world and maintain it over the last 15 years?

Dude! I am seeing Y&T in Napa! Wine country buddy! I have a room! They are playing a small theatre. Dave told me they would play 25 Hours A Day and Beautiful Dreamer! LOL! Should I hold him to that?

Jonny!

If you are at The Mystic in November I will book it! IN ROCK WE TRUST!

I AM NOT A FLAKE! I AM REAL!

I LOVE YOU!

I am still single and loving it. Are you?
