Texas King
Who has the bigger appeal to you? For me it's The Boss by a thin margin.

1-0-0-1-0-0-1
Petty. I don't picture Springsteen doing a song like this: Plus, Mike Campbell is awesome.

Digital Dad
Petty. By FAR!!! I mean just one song. Refugee. Tom is one of those guys with unlimited rocket sauce. Edited January 24, 2017 by Digital Dad

ETA: I like his later stuff when he reined in that singing style. He has a few older songs that are cool. Long, bombastic songs like Born To Run and Rosalita. Then he got into doing Rolling Stone Magazine-friendly "important" music.
ReRushed
I enjoy both. I am going with Petty.

ReRushed
Petty never underwhelmed my expectations. He always seems to deliver the goods. Springsteen always seems to be elevated to god-like status by critics and a good chunk of his fan base. And every artist that has been in similar circumstances has dropped the ball. Springsteen is no exception.

Mosher
I love much of Springsteen's output, but I am a bigger fan of Petty's. This seems unfair to the boss, though. The landside surprises me.

Lucas
Tom Petty has nice catalog and has been very sincere and reliable, but his work never moved me beyond appreciation .. I prefer Bruce's ability to really tug the emotions and paint the pictures ... Granted, Bruce has had some missteps, but isn't that what being an artist is all about ?? You stick your neck out, and in the attempt create, it might not always be as successful .. Born To Run, No Surrender, New York City Serenade, Drive All Night, Candy's Room - these are epics, and I like the highs Bruce was able to hit as far as emotion and being inspirational .. For me, Bruce is definitely more exhilarating and created more magic . . Edited January 25, 2017 by Lucas
