This is a kind of spinoff thread from the 21st Century Academy Awards Best Pics thread.

So who had the best performance?

Try not to think of their careers. Just these single performances.

As a side thought, I know people like to separate men and women into different categories for virtually everything. But personally, I wouldn't here. It's acting, not rugby.

It's pretty easy for me to admit Julianne Moore >>>>>>>>> Leo Di Caprio.

Or, DDL >>>>>>> Jennifer Lawrence

Other thoughts on some of those actors and actresses...

- Leo won for that? It was neither a bad performance nor bad movie but I wouldn't have even nominated him.

- Brie Larson...I had never heard of her before but she was great in Room. Powerful movie too.

- Matt Mc...I usually don't care about him either way and first think of him as the elder stoner in Dazed & Confused, but he's good in Dallas Buyer's Club. Nice surprise.

It was a close call between Julianne Moore, DDL, and Colin Firth but Moore's got my vote. So believable and touching a performance she had.

I didn't think many or any would agree with me on the Supreme Chancellor/1 category thang but what are your thoughts on that?

Well women's roles and men's roles are usually totally different making a one on one comparison between them very difficult. You could probably compare any Oscar year to confirm this, so to put them up against each other seems to be a bad idea. And if men won the award too often you'd get a bunch of protests like the one last year about not enough black actors winning a gong.

I can understand WHY it's done especially given the reason in your last sentence. I can also understand something you didn't mention--males are (probably) given more leading roles which would mean just by sheer number they'd have a greater chance of winning. With THAT I might change my own mind. And actually, I'm borderline on it. BUT I made the choice and went with one category.

With the idea "women's and men's roles are usually totally different", how about children? Hasn't a child been nominated for Best Actor or Actress before? I don't even know but I assume it's happened. And given that AND your idea that the roles for genders usually are different, don't you think the roles between adults and children are different too? Should there be a different category for children then?

Maybe there should be a kids category.

A lot of women's roles play opposite to a leading man in a kind complimentary way (this is one of the reasons they're different) which kind of creates a dynamic that distorts comparison. It's just easier to compare roles of the same sex.

Where have I been? I thought I have seen a lot of movies nominated for some kind of award, lol. Must have been supporting?? Once again, I only saw 3 of these, but I remember seeing Foxcatcher, American Hustle, The Help, Midnight in Paris, Grand Budapest Hotel, Brooklyn, Bridge of Spies, Steve Jobs (1/3 of it). I had better not go to the casino since the ones I pick are not winning the awards . . . :( Of the Best Actor/Actress above, I did see Dallas Buyer, King's Speech and Silver Linings Playbook. I really liked Matthew McConaughy in Dallas Buyers Club, but actually I liked Jared Leto even better. His performance was excellent! I just caught Steve Jobs on HBO last night or the night before? Ewww. I read a review that said the screen writers dramatized a few things but a lot were from real life. If only a few were from real life, then bless the people that had to deal with him. I had to turn it off as the temper tantrums they showed him throwing at Apple launches were not entertaining me.

Typical Hollywood liberal idiots want it both ways. Male and female alike are now simply "actors" yet they have separate categories for their self-serving award shows.

Why bother injecting "liberal" in here when "idiot" would've sufficed? I don't care about their politics or whatever they spout in their free time. I want good movies. I want good acting.

Yup, Leto was really good. In fact, I think it was more surprising to me that he was good than that Matt was good.

I skipped a lot of the movies you mentioned in the first paragraph.

Matthew McConaughey for me, and I´ve seen all but The Iron Lady. But to be honest, I would have given an Oscar to diCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street, and he would have won this poll for that movie too.
