Concert hall...

Post pics (and stories) of your favourite concert temples, theatres, halls, clubs whatever...

I will start with the Frankfurt Festhalle, which is one of Deutschlands finest venues. Built from 1907-1909 as a multipurpose hall, the place is nowadays very well known for its great rock events.

I always loved the idea that Rush decided to film R30 in the Festhalle... and the catacombs under the building have a special meaning to me (I met ⅔ of my heroes there).

Besides :rush: I've seen The Who and Sir Paul in Frankfurt, and I'm going to see Maiden in April.

Here we go...

Asbury Park NJ - Convention Hall

I saw Black Sabbath here 1972 & 1975. It's still standing. During the early 70's a lot of band played this hall.

Across the street is the Stone Pony where... you know who played numerous times.

I took this picture last year.

I've been an NJ resident since the day I was born, but weirdly enough, I've never been to any of the major NJ concert venues (Stone Pony, Starland Ballroom) except for the old Meadowlands (Izod) Center and PNC Bank Arts Center as most bands I've seen live always play in NYC (usually Manhattan or Brooklyn) usually at the expense of NJ and based on my geography, I reside closer to the NYC area. That said, though...

...as far as mid-sized venues in NYC, nothing comes close to the Playstation Theater (formerly Best Buy Theater and before that Nokia Theater) in Times Square. I've been here seven times (five of those were Steven Wilson including one Blackfield show from 2011-2015), and it's got one of the best sound systems of its kind at least in NYC, plus it's a really clean and modernistic venue. It's mixed standing/seating venue (the last two SW shows though had seats in the front) so if you wanna sit, there are seats in the back. Only downside is that it's in the heavy tourist area of Times Square so unless you're one of the first people in line, lining up is like a maze in and of itself.

Playstation Theater as shown from the stage:

On a more traditional and classical if not "movie palace" style venue, there's the King's Theater located in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn. Formerly the Loew's Kings Theater, it was originally a movie theater during the golden era of cinema before being closed in 1977. Up until two years ago, was left dormant before being rebuilt and restored to its original 1929 appearance as a concert venue. I gotta say, it's possibly of the most architecturally beautiful venues I've been in and the fact that Ghost played there to end the American leg of the Popestar Tour last year and to be able to witness it was a personal alignment of stars.

Glasgow Apollo.

Saw my first 5 or 6 Rush shows there (AFTK-->ESL) and was there for the ESL taping.

I was also there for the Status Quo and AC/DC live album tapings.

Yes it was rundown, the bouncers were evil c**ts, the concessions were non existent and the bathrooms were grisly, but it was the greatest place for rock concerts, crazy crowds and wonderful atmosphere.

Nothing has ever come close, the place was razed back in the late 80s and is now a shopping mall I think, haven't been back to my home country in a long time.

I saw Paco de Lucia here, months before he passed away - the Teatro Municipal of Rio. My wife had just found out she was pregnant, and she felt quite dizzy during the whole concert. Here it is:

The Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ was 'the' concert hall in the 70's and early 80's for up and coming bands. It was torn down in the 80's.

Porno theater mid-week and rock venue on the weekends. Multi-purpose !!!

I attended many 'rock' shows here. My most memorable shows were Genesis ( Lamb tour ), The Police, The Who ( won tickets for that one ) and many more. I missed Rush 2112 tour...

Check out the bands that came through.

New York City - Schaefer Music Festival

Late 60's / Early-Mid 70's outdoor music venue in Central Park, NY. It was great seeing a band with the NYC skyline as a backdrop.

I attended;

Todd Rundgren's Utopia - 1974

Mahavishnu Orchestra - 1974

Aerosmith - 1975

Red Rocks deserves a shout-out. Don't have a picture handy, but I saw Sabbath with Dio (H&H) there in 2009. Beautiful venue with terrific sound. Since RR is also a park that's open to the public, I was able to watch them assemble the stage set until mid afternoon when they kicked everyone out for soundcheck.

Here are some Red Rocks photos for you! It really is a unique place. I've only been to one show there but it was a wonderful experience.

Here is Pittsburgh's Civic Arena- my love!  It was a wonderful place from it's birth in 1961 until 2011, and they really did open the roof on clear nights if you were lucky. Most people know it from it being the first place that Rush played with Neil in August of 1974; . . I didn't know them until FBN the next year . I did see Rainbow, Jethro Tull, Neil Young; Elton John, Jackson Browne, Crosby, Stills and Nash; Pittsburgh Penguin games; always something going on! There was a hotel/restaurant right across the street from it where all the bands would stay and you would see someone famous once in a while. I miss it. The sound was average to lousy but it had soul.

The Shepherd's Bush Empire, London England.

I saw Porcupine Tree there in 2001. The show was filmed for what should become their first DVD release, but technical problems appeared on the scene, and sadly the material collects dust ever since. Hope they (SW) release this show one fine day...

Your concert history is unbeatable. Love to read some of your stories about those 70's shows. Always a pleasure. :ebert:
