Maverick
He won Best Overall Guitarist in Guitar Player Magazine for five years in a row. He was the first one they had to retire to the Gallery of Greats to give someone else a chance. And he's won other awards since, including Best Slide, etc. He doesn't get much press now because he's old as Hell, and plays in a cover band still called Yes. Now, perhaps outside of the circle of guitar players, he is not appreciated as much as folks like Hendrix, Page, or Clapton. So maybe in that respect he is underrated.

Self-Indulgence
Not buy me he isn't. If it has strings and a fretboard, then Steve Howe has mastered it.

bathory
he's not a household name but that doesn't make him underrated. a lot of things I used to call underrated I eventually realized were pretty highly rated.

Xanadoood
Music critics, yes. He's under appreciated cause of the genre he came from. But guitarists definitely appreciate him.
vaportrailer
Steve Howe channels Nigel Tuffnel."Turn the spotlight off it's making me angry!" (Spotlight is tuned off)"Turn the spotlight on, I can't see anything!" I can't imagine Steve Howe kicking someone in the head, he's too frail. He might hurt his foot.
