My sister in law dated a guy who was in a Star Wars club, and they all had extremely elaborate costumes. They even had trading cards made up of themselves in costume. The guy she dated had a Boba Fett costume, and it looked just like he was in the movie. I don't think I've ever encountered a geekier group of people in my life! I always referred to the guy as "the Man Child."

The Man Child wasn't working for a long time, and once he was talking about getting his ticket to see The Who in concert. I asked him how he could afford that, and he replied in an indignant tone, "I've sold some of my collectibles." :LMAO:

Anime.

And it's the worst.

Why 90% of the sounds from people's mouths is non-verbal will always confuse me, but it makes watching most anime unbearable. But the fans swear by it like cult members.

Well, there's Pokemon shit and then there's this...

...and a whole lot in between. I don't like more than half of anime stuff but there's too much goodness in that genre to write off. [see also: Miyazaki.]

I've tried a few of the ones that are supposed to be classics and I still didn't like them.

Which ones?

I didn't like Princess Mononoke at all, for starters.

Her titties too small?

I'm a total LOTR nerd and am one of the book purists that gets pissed off when I watch the movies because of the character changes (poor Faramir!!!...he would have NEVER!! tried to take The Ring from Frodo!!...and Denethor...and Aragorn...agh!!!).

I've reached a point where I can actually separate my enjoyment of both the books and the films. So much so sometimes I prefer the films...I love them... (OK I'm being silly...books are bae).

But I cannot ever see myself doing this with The Hobbit. Yuck! (I like those though...but...oh my days what were they thinking?)

Miyazaki is a genre all his own.

Miyazaki is my favourite artist in any medium ever. Ever.

I don't remember much of it, but I remember being bored, unfulfilled with the story, and annoyed at the voice acting. I tried to get into anime around 2000-2004 and watched a bunch of movies which were recommended to me, and didn't like any one of them. And it's not a cartoon issue (there are lots of animated movies and serious TV shows I like) but a story and acting one. The voice acting is often much worse than I see in video games...at least it seems to me. I've chalked it up to cultural issues as I don't like just about anything animated out of Japan. I love Final Fantasy, and I hated the movies they did on them...especially Advent Children which was one of the worst voice acting I'd ever heard anywhere (on top of bad story-telling).

Are Bronies still a thing?

That's not geeky. That's a mental illness.

Probably a lot of amino acid. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Well considering they have to dub the voices in on the American versions to fit in the exact space of the Japanese animation, it's not always easy to do. If you have watched any of the extras on the DVDs of Miyazaki's films, they usually talk to the voice actors and show the process.

Probably because Japanese do that in daily life. No joke, no criticism, no rip.

A "no" can be uttered with a "uhhh" or "mmmhm" ((not sure how to type that)). A "yes" can be vocalized with a sharper burst of an "uh". I once tried to demonstrate that for my bro by asking Mrs.B simple jokey questions like so...

Me: Miho, do I like meat?

Miho: ((uh))

Me: Do I like ice cream?

Miho: ((uh))

Me: Have I been to Timbuktu?

Miho: ((uhhh))

Me: Have you been to Timbuktu?

Miho: ((uhhh))

My bro: Wait a minute! They sound the same!

Miho: ((uhhh))

My bro: So is that 'yes' or 'no'?

Miho: No.

Me: ((uh))

This reminds me of a conversation I had a few days ago with my doctor . . . As I'm there with the IV, he hangs around monitoring and talking ... He loves music and plays the guitar, and we got to talking about bands, music and the guitar in particular ..

He said he was looking for some new music to listen to ( he's in his late 40s - 50ish ) and into metal guitar and shredders ( which was a surprise 'cause he's a total geek ) ... So I mention a few new guys, and I mention Japanese guitarist Hizaki ..

So he tells me about a study he had read about while in medical school ..

He approached it gently at first, trying to say that musicians from Asian countries can be amazing, and at such young ages .. I acknowledged this by saying "of course, there are 14 year old Japanese kids on youtube playing Yngwie note for note"

Anyways, he said that the Japanese and Chinese languages are obviously different than what we know, and that there are inflections and volume differences that can give alternate meanings in ways other languages don't ..

He said this trains the ear and brain in a way that can be very conducive to learning music, and how notes, melodies and musical patterns are heard and recalled ..

It was fascinating stuff

Have you ever heard a Japanese woman (in Japan/in a Japanese film) answer the phone at her office? Her vocalization is much higher than her actual voice. Usually sounds nothing like her.

Well considering they have to dub the voices in on the American versions to fit in the exact space of the Japanese animation, it's not always easy to do. If you have watched any of the extras on the DVDs of Miyazaki's films, they usually talk to the voice actors and show the process.

The ever-present non-verbal vocalizations get me the most. Why do they do that?

Anyways, he said that the Japanese and Chinese languages are obviously different than what we know, and that there are inflections and volume difference that can give alternate meanings in ways other languages don't ..

Is this intentional JB, or does it alter the way the greeting is received - as in more or less formal ??

All I can relate it to is my sis, and sometimes when she answers the phone at work or talks to a customer, her voice goes up 2 octaves because she's wanting to sound accommodating, but not doing it intentionally

Which ones?

As with many things in Japan, there's never a clear answer. I've asked about the high-pitched phone greeting before and have gotten these answers...

- Really? Do we do that?

- It's just how we answer the phone. There's no reason.

- The change in voice sounds more polite.

So it means your sister might be Japanese.

I'm on the train now and just thought that many of the male train conductors/drivers change their voice when making announcements. I've pointed this out before to my wife and she said she never noticed it...then answered with "Maybe some think it's more polite." Basically, I think nobody knows what the hell they're doing! They just do it...or not do it.

Here's another thing connected to my previous post about yes/no utterances in Japan...and a kind of epilogue...

On the same visit to Florida and just a few days after that yes/no thang with my wife and bro (MarkyBlaze) we were waiting outside a crowded restaurant...

MarkyBlaze: Well, they said it'd be at least a 90 minute wait.

Miho: ((heeeeeee...))

MarkyBlaze: (joking) Hey, is that a 'yes' or 'no'?

Miho: (laughing) That's a long wait isn't it?

Me: Right. That's the sound of surprise.

MarkyBlaze: (still joking) So "heeeeee" means you're surprised?

Miho: (laughing) Actually, yes. I'm surprised.

MarkyBlaze: See, now all of those sounds they made on Speed Racer are finally beginning to make sense!

Me: ((uhh))

True story. :blaze:
