520-- The Age Of Innocence (1993). Just like Kubrick, Scorsese can do any genre well. This is romantic-drama set in 1870s New York based on the book by Edith Wharton and stars Daniel-Day Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder.

I think its a hidden gem of modern day cinema! Bale is extremely good, and he is a very hit or miss actor for me!

 

And Black Book is exceptionally entertaining. Feels both like an adventure romp and a thought provoking war movie.

 

Both films are sexy without being sordid like your typical Hollywood blockbuster. Sensual and real. Both are brutal as well.

Interesting, because I had mentioned the genius of Richard Matheson over in the Top 200 TV Shows thread ..

 

Up until just now, I was familiar with much of Matheson's early work, but I didn't know he was the author of "What Dreams May Come" !!

 

Matheson stated in an interview, "I think What Dreams May Come is the most important (read effective) book I've written. It has caused a number of readers to lose their fear of death – the finest tribute any writer could receive."

 

In an introductory note, Matheson explains that the characters are the only fictional component of the novel. Almost everything else is based on research, and the end of the novel includes a lengthy bibliography.

 

 

I'll have to do some more reading about this

Also of interest, on a related note is the life and work of Charles Beaumont, another creative genius who worked on the Twilight Zone - and whose life had a very tragic end under mysterious circumstances .. He was 38 when he died, but at around age 34, he began to age rapidly and unexplainable - Beaumont's own son said this :

 

"he looked ninety-five and was, in fact, ninety-five by every calendar except the one on your watch."

RIP Harry Dean Stanton.

 

I saw this a long time ago. I think I found the dvd(or maybe even VHS I can't remember)in the local library. This was maybe in the late nineties or early 2000's. Anyway, I borrowed it because I remember Roger Ebert giving it four stars out of four. I didn't always agree with Roger's opinion but I agree with him on this one. A really great movie and one that is very overlooked these days I'm afraid. Very under rated. Another favorite that left a mark when I first saw it as a kid .. Chuck Connors and a cast of mannequins in one of the most bizarre and unsettling horror films ever ... Tourist Trap has its obvious influences, but is still able to stand alone, and definitely has its place in the history of horror ..

Been away (again) for a while so I'll do consecutive posts. Sixteen Candles made me think of the Jake character, played by Michael Schoeffling, which made me think of this movie.

 

Funny and touching movie. Say what you want about the real Cher (I don't give her much thought either way), but she's a great actress I think. Bob Hoskins is great as always. I've always struggled a bit with Winona Ryder but I can tolerate her here.

Anyway, the movie was a lot of fun and I'm sure us "music people" can appreciate it especially those of us who like lists. Of course guys who work in record stores don't actually act that way. Legendary producer Val Lewton teamed with director Jacques Tourneur for a number of great movies, with Cat People probably being the most well know .. But I'm picking The Leopard Man here, even though it is not quite the classic that Cat People is, and only clocks in at 66 minutes ..

 

Made in 1943, The Leopard Man is a very early example of a slasher film ( a sub genre that I love ) and there is one absolutely classic and very well done chase scene in this movie that puts it above some of their other, more well know and probably better work ..
