RK, I did not realize that .. I had no idea Night Of The Hunter was his only film as far as directing .. I just found this:

 

At the time of its original release, however, it was a critical and box-office failure, and Laughton never directed again.

I was probably going to pick another Kubrick film myself. Was leaning towards Eyes Wide Shut anyway. While Shelley Winters might not be thought of as much of an actress today if you know her from Poseidon Adventure or her stint on Roseanne but she was a solid actress who found herself in some pretty good and notable movies. Besides being in 3 of the last 5 choices, she's been in: A Double Life, Winchester '73 (another worthy candidate for this list), A Place In The Sun, The Diary Of Anne Frank, A Patch Of Blue (she won supporting Oscar) and Alfie.

Woody Allen went on to make some respected, Oscar-worthy films, and while Bananas might not be in the category, I'm not sure he ever made anything funnier ... Bizarre bordering on surreal and possibly the funniest movie I have ever seen

Sidney Poitier is marvelous, of course, and this is the final appearance of the great on-screen duo of Katherine Hepburn (who won the Best Actress Oscar) and Spencer Tracy (this was Tracy's last film, finished just days before his passing). A bold film in its positive portrayal of interracial marriage, oddly coinciding with the Loving v. Virginia decision that struck down anti-miscegenation laws. The film was nominated for nine Academy awards, including best picture and best director (Stanley Kramer).

456-- Moolaadé (2004). Haven't seen too many movies made in Africa by an African director, but this is a solid entry by the highly thought of Ousmane Sembene (his last movie before he died). It's a drama about a woman trying to protect some young girls from going through the ritual of genital mutilation in a small village which puts her at odds with the villagers, both men and women.

 

On a side note, I found this personal quote in the director's bio page on IMDb (he fought for the the Free French Army during WWII): "In the army we saw those who considered themselves our masters naked, in tears, some cowardly or ignorant. When a white soldier asked me to write a letter for him, it was a revelation--I thought all Europeans knew how to write. The war demystified the colonizer; the veil fell."

My favorite adaptation of I Am Legend, and one of the most unnerving movies I've ever seen .. Very effective in all its low budget glory, and Vincent Price is outstanding ( and understated ) as Dr Morgan ..

 

Modern filmmakers spend so much effort trying to make their audience feel repulsed or disturbed and it never fails to leave me feeling anything but ... Last Man On Earth delivers in large part because of it's simplicity and sadness ..

 

An obvious influence of George Romero's Night Of The Living Dead .. and about a thousand other great films that followed ..

Another excellent adaptation of the I Am Legend story. Charleton Heston gives a great performance as the man that appears to be the sole survivor of a plague. The hippy cultishness of the afflicted makes for a great vibe throughout the film.

Intriguing and suspenseful true story about the events that unfolded in the aftermath of the water gate scandal. Starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman this is a must see for history and political buffs in particular. This was released in 1976 just two years after Nixon resigned.

461-- Bad Lieutenant (1992)/ Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans (2009). Abel Ferrara directs Harvey Keitel as the title character who's investigating a nun's rape while his life spirals downward. If anyone has ever wanted to see Keitel's 'gun' then this is for you. The not-a-sequel directed by Werner Herzog and starring Nicholas Cage is a very solidly entertaining dark comedy. If anyone was hoping, Cage's 'gun' does NOT make an appearance. I have seen this movie only once, but it left quite an impact .. Similar in nightmarish tone as The Wicker Man, a very innocent vacationing couple opts to travel to a small, isolated island off the main location of their stay .. and while the notion of a desolate island run by homicidal children might seem implausible, the movie is so effective at conveying the this cannot be happening vibe of nightmares ..

 

Horror just the way I love it - bleak and humorless
