Cuckoo's Nest is one my favorite films of all times and, along with epic performances by Nicholson and Louise Fletcher, features some great performances from the likes of Danny Devito, Christopher Lloyd, and others. Mmmmm...Juicy Fruit I remember my parents going to see Cuckoo's Nest in the theater ... It was one of the first times I can remember staying with a babysitter ( this hot neighbor girl ) ..... anyways, I remember my parents coming back and talking about how great the movie was - esp my Mom ... She was very moved by it .... When it came out on VHS, I remember seeing it for the first time, and the ending really got to me - it was very very moving .. I can imagine my Mom in the theater circa 1975 sobbing at the end Great movie My parents took me with them when they saw it in the theater. I was ten and the lobotomy freaked me out; it really bothered me for awhile. Apart from The Andromeda Strain, which I saw when I was maybe seven, no movie troubled me more as a kid. For years I hated Nurse Ratched more than any other fictional character. I'd have to think if that's still not true. In the case of the Andromeda Strain, I was paranoid of anything I though resembled a space virus for a couple years; not that I had any idea what a space virus looked like, but if something looked weird and gooey, it just might be a space virus. After Alien, my favorite movie, and favorite (logically) Coen Brothers movie. Just love this for so many reasons; always have. Watched it when it came out (and before the Coen Brothers were well-known) with someone I knew who taught (among other things) foreign film at the local university (he grew up in France). He kept raving about the cinematography. About every ten to fifteen minutes he’d lean forward in his chair and almost yell, “You see what they’re doing here?!?”, and he’d go on to explain something or other. I loved the camera work but mainly I just thought it was funny as h*ll. Anyway, full of great characters and memorable lines, such as, “Well, which is it, young feller? You want I should freeze or get down on the ground? Mean to say, if'n I freeze, I can't rightly drop. And if'n I drop, I'm a-gonna be in motion” or “You mean you busted out of jail…No, ma'am. We released ourselves on our own recognizance…What Evelle here is trying to say is that we felt that the institution no longer had anything to offer us” or (well these could go on for pages). As well, it’s not only funny but touching and a sensitive look at very flawed people (except for Tex Cobb’s bounty hunter, who’s more of a living metaphor for unrestrained evil). It could have easily been a condescending and sneering look at people in “flyover” country but avoids that really. Despite everyone being an exaggeration of some sort, they are all likable and treated like a person (again, except for the bounty hunter willing to sell children on the black market). Speaking of Tex Cobb’s character, this scene perfectly captures the surreal comedy of the film. H.I.’s hellish vision of the “Lone Biker of the Apocalypse”: The ending has my favorite movie monologue, after Roy Batty’s “Tears in Rain” self-elegy: That night I had a dream. I dreamt I was as light as the ether- a floating spirit visiting things to come. The shades and shadows of the people in my life rassled their way their way into my slumber. I dreamed that Gale and Evelle had decided to return to prison. Probably that's just as well. I don't mean to sound superior, and they're a swell couple of guys, but maybe they weren't ready yet to come out into the world. And then I dreamed on, into the future, to a Christmas morn in the Arizona home where Nathan Junior was opening a present from a kindly couple who preferred to remain unknown. I saw Glen a few years later, still having no luck getting the cops to listen to his wild tales about me and Ed. Maybe he threw in one Polack joke too many. I don't know. And still I dreamed on, further into the future than I had ever dreamed before, watching Nathan Junior's progress from afar, taking pride in his accomplishments as if he were our own. Wondering if he ever thought of us and hoping that maybe we'd broadened his horizons a little even if he couldn't remember just how they got broadened. But still I hadn't dreamt nothing about me and Ed until the end. And this was cloudier cause it was years, years away. But I saw an old couple being visited by their children, and all their grandchildren too. The old couple weren't screwed up. And neither were their kids or their grandkids. And I don't know. You tell me. This whole dream, was it wishful thinking? Was I just fleeing reality like I know I'm liable to do? But me and Ed, we can be good too. And it seemed real. It seemed like us and it seemed like, well, our home. If not Arizona, then a land not too far away. Where all parents are strong and wise and capable and all children are happy and beloved. I don't know. Maybe it was Utah. Edit: the song that runs throughout the movie, and really ads to it I think, is (somewhat dark, lyrically, to say the least) bluegrass standard "Down in the Willow Garden". He hated it, I thought it was brilliant. Maybe he overthought the concept but basically what we have here is a globe-spanning train which holds the last remnants of humanity after an attempt at climate engineering in order to stop global warming has unintentionally created a new ice age.
