hunh? I'm not a huge fan, but their first few records are pretty swell.

Duty Now For the Future is my fave of the bunch. I was just enjoying it now and wondered what Rush fans thought about Devo. Not a lot I guess, as I couldn't find a thread! Doubt I'll find a Gary Numan one either...

Oh well, here's a crunchy cover of It's Not Right. Damn, I'm loving this:

I love Devo!! AMAZING Band!!

cool! the old drummer played some pretty freaky stuff. Josh Freese played drums with them when they opened for Metallica at Lollapalooza in the late 90's. There's a short (and cheap) DVD of this show, and it's a fun watch.

i only mention it because i get the impression that you're interested in drums

Hey there, all you SpudBoys and SpudGirls!!!! :dweez:

I'm a big DEVO fan and have posted qute a bit of DEVO stuff in the "What Are You Listening To...? thread, and others. Are We Not Men? and Freedom of Choice are my top two DEVO efforts, but I also dig SHOUT!, New Traditionalists and Oh, No...! I was lucky enough to catch DEVO at Seattle's Paramount Theater for the Oh, No...! tour. Amazing show. What's lots on some people is how good of guitarists these guys actually were. And you mentioned the drumming. Very creative, early on.

And of course, the sense of humor!

Shrivel up, People!!!!

The last album, Something for Everybody, is fantastic (released in 2010). Love their earlier music as well. Edited by Leanne

Devo played back to back dates in SF in 2009. The first night was "Are We Not Men?", second night they performed "Freedom of Choice". I was right up front both nights and LOVED both shows! Are We Not Men was like a good ol' punk show with full mosh pit and very rock show vibe. The second night was super mellow with plenty of elbow room for everybody but still lots of energy from the band and crowd. There was a full train-wreck tune while they were performing "F..o.C.". It looked like something might have been wrong with the band's monitors, Mark kept looking at a tele-prompter for lyrics, and they didn't seem to be able to hear what the others were doing. The whole tune was out of synch and vocals were out of tune and off-beat... just a mess. Nobody really cared, just played until it came to an end. I could hear the band talking to one another and heard Mark say to Bob 1 with kind of an exasperated laugh, "What the fuque was that?!" when it was all over... good times.... "Are We Not Men" was one of the very first records I owned and loved as a kid. I still have that album... I think it's time to give it a spin, eh! Rock on!

Techincally, Something (else) for everybody was their last album. It has all the cuts that didn't make it on Something for Everybody. This is such a weird thread because I was listening to some import cheap-o DEVO disc last night in the car. It's a combo of Duty Now For the Future and New Traditionalists. I know many people say the Q/A album is the best but honestly aside from a few good songs I think Duty Now blows it away. So does Freedom of Choice for that matter (Snowball and Planet Earth are under-rated!) I'm probably the only one who thinks Oh No It's DEVO is a great album even though poor Alan took a back seat to a drum machine for half of it.

That's a tough one, they have so many. Plus I can't seem to use the 'ENTER' key while posting so I can't list them like you did haha. I'll try to give you my top ten: Smart Patrol / Clock Out / What We Do / Peek A Boo / Explosions / Blockhead / Beautiful World / Snowball / Girl U Want / Freedom of Choice.

wow, lots of Devo fans here! this whole Rush forum rocks because of its diversity.

Top 10 Old-School Devo:

Mongoloid - love the bass and Eno's claustrophobic production. the drums rock too!

Come Back Jonee - the rhythm guitar cracks me up

Sloppy - just plain weird, but tuneful

Strange Pursuit - there must be a metal version of this song

Blockhead - the verses are in 11/8 if memory serves me correctly. prog!

Red Eye - something about the sound of this one that I enjoy. weirdly reminds me of Eagles of Death Metal "I'm Your Torpedo"

It's Not Right - love the Deva cover version!

Gates of Steel - awesome and oddly depressing

Penetration in the Centerfold - ridiculous, but fun. holy syncopation!

Soo Bawls - I'm a sucker for a song that starts with "Pretty Mongo..."

honourable mention:

Devo Corporate Anthem

My favorite disc is Hardcore, Vol 2. All sorts of old demo versions of their best and plenty of otherwise unreleased gems...

Devo made the best promo videos! I remember my favorites were "Beautiful World", "Peek-A-Boo" and "Girl U Want", but they were all classics. Need to go look them up again!

I have an old VHS of their stuff, featuring Boogie Boy. Probably on YouTube somewhere.

Yeah, their stuff from the early to mid-70's is gold.

I agree it's darn near impossible. I finished my list and immediately hated it! Snowball is a great choice!
