I have a question for resident drummers (where has Earl been anyway??).

It was inspired by this video:  https://youtu.be/MbXWrmQW-OE

How do you do two different things at once with your arms?  How does one arm keep one beat and the other another beat or be hitting something else?

It's the rub-your-head and pat-your-belly thing, only with a bunch of bellies and heads.
But that's mindless.  This looks like it's involving two different beats at the same time.  That must take a lot of concentration.

The best example is probably Peart's 'drum also waltzes' bit. I can play a lot of Rush tunes and what I can't play still seems learnable with practice.. but that waltz thing he does just seems impossible..
Here's where Neil got that bit...Max Roach.

I could just see me trying to do that.  It would make a good comedy video watching me try, that's for sure.

If someone doesn't have the talent, all the practice in the world will not give it to them.  Looks to me like you have to be pretty coordinated to be a drummer.

Practice is the best explanation. Starting slow and repetition, repetition, repetition.

Agreed. The question wasn't "how does one acquire talent?", the question was, "How do you do two different things at once with your arms?"
Practice is the answer.
