I was just saying this in another thread, but let me repeat it here.. Steven Wilson's latest couple of albums haven't been solo albums, they've been the birth of a new band which just happens to be under the "Steven Wilson" name. It would be sort of like considering The Steve Miller Band a solo project.

I'm not going to mention any of my favourite guys, Like Jeff Beck, Steve Hackett and Frank Zappa, since they all had (or have) long running solo careers, so there would be way too much to mention.

I'll just stick to solo projects that were done more as a one-off, or when still part of another band

Steve Rothery (from Marillion) - The Ghosts of Pripyat

Chris Squire - Fish Out of Water

David Gilmour - David Gilmour

Martin Barre (from Jethro Tull) - Stage Left

Robert Plant's Principle of Moments is one of my favorite albums. Just perfect. Peter Gabriel's So is another. For me, these are two rare solo efforts that match and even eclipse the work that the artists did with their iconic bands. And, Catherine, you're right...I'll throw Tom Petty's Wildflowers in this category as well.
